Is it normal for a child to have a BM when they are sleeping and not wake up until the morning??? Do you think that it could mean something serious like a medical problem?

I did call the pedo and I am still waiting on the doctor to call me back. The child is 8 and had bedwetting problems. He is conpletly alseep and doesnt wake up until the am. I feel so helpless for him. He just asks "why do I do this" :( makes me sad. I don't have an answer.

What can I do next?

I think it sounds like he's constipated and some stool is getting out. It's a fairly common problem. Call your doctor. They can do an abdominal x-ray if necessary to check for backed up stool and give you recommendations about temporary supplements like Miralax or mineral oil. My son deals with the constipation issue and stool getting out involuntarily, although not when he's sleeping. Good luck. Oh, constipation can cause bedwetting problems too so the issues are often related. It's also not unusual to still have nighttime wetness at age 8, although the doctor may be able to address that also.

Google encopresis (sp?) My son is currently battling this, we were completly unaware of any problems with his BM's as he was completly potty trained independent, until he started having middle of the night BM accidents.
My son is 4 ... we are doing Miralax and a high fiber diet to treat once it was diagnosed with a Xray that showed his bowels completly full and partially blocked with stool.
Good luck!

It would depend on the age of the child and the position that they sleep in. Ex. if they sleep on their knees, the diaper isn't being pressed and they may not feel it.

If you are worried that there is a medical issue, you should feel free to contact your pediatrician/nurse.

I don't think it's normal to have night time BMs. Are you sure it's not happening when the child is still awake or wakening in the middle of the night? I'd call the ped's office and ask a nurse. Good luck!
