So What Happened?

Hi All thanx for all of your responses. We decided to suck it up and go for the wooden covertible crib toddler rail 9 for 70 something dollars- UGH but... it is working out really well and my daughter LOVES her new bed. The transition was a snap and took one night! We hear her roaming around up there exploring her freedom, and sometimes she falls asleep on the floor, VERY FUNNY but she loves to be in her room, so all is well!!!!! Thanx again!!!

they fit the problem is that toddler beds dont have mattress and boxsprings for them to go between and keep them there safely. you could buy a toddler bed that hasa rail attached. or if you dont mind altering the bed make some wih wood. http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId...
for now though just line the floor next to the bed with blankets and pillows. they shouldnt get hurt if they do fall though sense its not a long fall. they fall that far everyday just walking. good luck finding something you are comfortable with.

You should contact the store where you bought your toddler bed - they should have a rail. Our rail was an acccessory to the convertable crib/toddler bed/reg bed that we had to buy separately.

D.,
when my children were younger I had 2 bedrails that tucked under the mattress. They were great, and fit any bed. I initally wondered about their true effectiveness, -- just tucking under the mattress -- but they worked great! I think I got them at Toys R Us. I expect any store like Walmart, Target or stores that carry 'baby apparatus' would have something like this. OR, try ebay!
Good luck, and congrats on the next addition to your family.
You are truely blessed.
Sincerely,
S.

D.,

This message is as much for you as for any other mother who reads this and is thinking of the convertable crib. I have 2 girls 10 mos apart, and had 2 cribs that were "convertable" from crib to toddler bed to full sized bed. Made sense when we got them, but it never occurred to us that the "toddler bed" would be so high, or that all the guard rails would be for longer beds. We had the same problem and finally broke down and bought toddler beds for them. The problem with the longer guard rails on the toddler beds was that after a few years of jumping around in the crib, there was no way to convince them that they couldn't still do it the the new "handy dandy lower rail" and there was no room for them to crawl around the thing to get on and off the bed. We decided on the "toddler bed" because we figured, "Hey, we already have all of these bottom sheets, just get flat sheets and we are all set to go." Our girls are TINY so the idea of a twin bed scared us. The first few times we heard our youngest hit the floor, we were happy she was only a few inches up...Anyway, they also don't tell you that it is next to impossible to find flat sheets to go with all those cute fitted sheets you have for your crib. A little easier to get heavier throw blankets to use, but for the sheets, you need to get "toddler sets" for $30-$50 a pop. I did finally find a site on-line www.ababy.com that has them, but if you have a larger child that will outgrow his or her crib mattress soon, don't waste you money. Go from a REGULAR crib to a REGULAR twin bed with a guard rail. Our girls still have a few years in these beds, though. We joke at our house that they will be going tohigh school in their booster seats...Do you think they let you use a booster seat for the drivers test?

Good luck with the furniture dilemma. I know it drove me nuts, and my husband wanted it resolved "immediately" which only made things harder.

If the rail is just intended to keep your daughter from falling out of bed, I have a suggestion that someone shared with me. Take a pool noodle, cut it to the length of the bed, and put in under the sheet. Just use the stretchiest little sheet you can find and it should work. I didn't actually end up needing to do this, but it sounded like a great idea to me. Good luck!

All the bed rails will say specifically: NOT FOR TODDLER BEDS. So, of course, my official advice is not to use one that's not designed for a toddler bed. That said, we used the Summer one on our convertable crib for our oldest son and plan to use it for our younger son as well. The major concern, as far as I can tell, is the danger of getting their heads caught in between the bed rail and the end of the crib/bedpost. We used the one with straps, not long bars... that's how we made it fit on the toddler bed. The straps go across under the mattress and we tied them to the bottom spring bar on the wall side. (does that make sense?) We also made sure to position it so it leaves one big opening on one side - where his feet usually were - not in the middle with two small openings on either side of the bed rail. (again, hope I'm making sense.) We were convinced that made it safe. He did just fine... and truthfully, he transitioned to a big boy bed so quickly... seems like a wink.

Good luck.

We may still have two---one very sturdy metal one with the bars that fit under the mattress and another wooden one that folded in half with sides of a mesh and we took on travel. In addition to ToyRUs and similar retail stores, also think:elderly. Medical supply places, better pharmacies and catalogs with things for elderly have these as well.
If we still have ours in the attic or garage, they are yours for free if you would like to pick them up. Please respond via mamasource after 7pm tonight and I will have had time to search!

Hi D.,

I got a Kidco Convertible Crib Bed Rail from Buy Buy Baby ($69.99) to use for my son's crib when we convert it into a daybed. The store employee said that it's the only one that works for crib mattresses & that whenever a customer bought one of the cheaper ones to try it, they end up returning them because they don't work right. I had a 20% off Bed Bath & Beyond coupon when I bought it so that helped with the price. I did a lot of searching online & never found anything cheaper so I ended up getting it. It's still in the box because my son (remarkably) hasn't shown any interest in climbing out of his crib but I know it's coming soon so we're ready when he is. Good luck! :-)

Hi D.,

Check with the manufacturer or the store that you got your convertible crib from to see if they have them or can order them. I bought a convertible crib for my son, but the railing came with it and I had to buy the bed frame to change it into a full size bed separately. Also, the company One Step Ahead offers side railings in a regular size and an extra long size that probably can be used on the toddler bed since it is just slid in between the mattress and the frame. Its an inexpensive way to go, and you can use them on the side of the bed when you finally convert it to a regular bed.
