Bed Bugs?

Ok, so I always thought bed bugs were just something moms said to beware of when they tucked you into bed. I guess I always knew there was an actual critter, but had never seen one, and well I still haven't. Ok, so I've been waking up with these horrible bites all over my arms and legs. My husband, who sleeps right beside me, has NONE. One of my girlfriends suggested that it might be bed bugs. So I looked them up online, and followed the instructions for locating them, or at least finding signs of them, but there are none! What on earth could be biting me? Some of the bites are huge welts, but I don't feel anything biting me. This has just happened the past three nights. I washed my bedclothes over the weekend, and I rearranged my bedroom last week, so I vacuumed every corner of the room, the mattress etc. The only change I can think of is that the bed is now against the wall on my side. My daughter also has a couple, but I don't know if she gets them from playing outside. Anyway, has anyone else had issues with bites or bed bugs, and if so, did you ever find the culprit? I can't handle anymore bites, they are driving me crazy!!!!

Thanks Moms!

So What Happened?

Thanks Ladies! I'll keep you posted as to what works for us. I watched that National Geographic video on YouTube last night, which is how I knew how to look for them. It was super informative. I think I've ruled them out. Mosquitoes are possible, I haven't seen them inside but I've seen them a lot around the house. I had never thought of hives, but would my daughter also be getting them? I'm allergic to Avon's Skin So Soft, we used to use it on our horses as fly repellent (it smells so much better!) but I break out in a rash when I use it. I didn't realize that baby oil worked, I'll give that a try. Thank you! I always learn so much from this site! Here's to NO MORE bites!!!!!

I have the same problem. I wake up with bites and my husband doesn't. I know it is mosquitos. I have seen them flying around, but I can't catch them. Unfortunately, with all of the abandoned houses, the pools are mosquito breeding grounds. I wish I had some advice for you. Skin So Soft from Avon works well to keep them off of you, but I don't have any advice to get rid of them.

If it is Mosquitos...
You can report the abondoned houses to the Health Dept. for green pools (or anyone for that matter). They will come out and post a sign (or speak directly) for the owners to drain their pools or be cited.
We had to do this with our neighbor's pool.
Now they conveniently drain it w/o warning.
As for the bedbugs...
Here is a link for an interesting article plus a video from National Geographic via YouTube:

Good luck!

Well they these bed bugs like men too because we had the same problem in our last home a couple times for a couples weeks at a time; however it was my husband getting bit not me. We just washed out sheets alot in HOT water. I also sprayed lyesol on our mattresses and wiped down the bed with cleaner. Getting your carpets cleaned might help too. Good Luck.

I haven't had any bedbug experience, but I have a possible way of avoiding bites at night. When our sons were little they kept waking up in the morning with welts. Sometimes it was one, sometimes both that had the welts and they slept in the same room. Put a little baby oil or Avon Skin So Soft oil on all exposed areas at bedtime. For some reason this acts as a repellent. It should at least cut down on the bites and/or welts for you and your daughter. Do you have any pets that could be getting on your side of the bed? This could be a reason for it being just you. Then again, bugs sometimes like a certain person too. Good luck.

It may not be Bed Bugs but Spiders instead. I have a lot of tiny spiders in my house lately. You may want to have someone come out and spray the inside of your house and the outside as well.
Good Luck

That is so weird! That exact thing happened to my daughter!! I look obsessively in the bed and have never seen anything! I started to think it was a mosquito who was just feasting on her on and off all night! I still have no idea what it was/is when it happens so I would be very curious about any theories myself!
:o)~ J.
PS - I heard that dryer sheets keep mosquitoes away so maybe we should all try sleeping with them to possibly rule them out if it still happens!

I sometimes have trouble with mosquitoes. They seem to only like the scent of certain people - and, I believe, women more than men. I wake up in the morning with bites all over, like you. They hide in the curtains and on the ceiling in the daytime and feed on me at night. But, when I get rid of them, no more bites! Good luck!

We live in Queen Creek, and with the increase of rain/humidity the past week, we have started to see an increase in mosquitos again. I'm outside with my dogs a lot and mosquitos LOVE me, so I'm always the first to notice in my family. They do sneak inside, though, and although we very rarely see them, we'll occasionally get bitten there, as well. They're especially active at night- it helps that we're not moving as much then, and they have an ingredient in their saliva that's numbing (sorry, I know that's gross) so we often don't feel them "biting" us. It may just be that the little buggers have just increased in your area helped by the weather we're having, and they're finding you the tastiest member of your family (yes, they do prefer some people to others!). Good luck with whatever you find out and hang in there!

I don't have bites, but its seems like my son always has new ones...they are usually on his tummy or bum, I have been putting off on him when he goes outside, but he is still getting them!! I also wonder if it is some type of bug in his room...I haven't been able to find anything except these itsy bitsy spiders (I mean they are tiny) so I am wondering if that is what is biting him. Good luck finding your bug, hope your bites go away soon :)

I'd have to agree with Tracy... mosquitos... ugh! I get those bites too as does my 2 YO. My DH, 5 YO and 10 MO do not get bit at night. I noticed I was getting them when I wore shorts to bed one night; got bit all up and down my legs!

I thought bed bugs were dust mights. They live in the bed and everywhere, but they don't bite. You may have a flee problem. If you have pets, check for flees. If not, if you or your daughter has played or petted an animal lately, you could have picked up some flees. You will have to bomb your house with a spray bomb. We have this problem before when we played with a neighbor's cat.

I had an experience like this twice, but it turned out to be hives - an itchy reaction to either sulfa & penicillan medication. The only other thing would be mosquito bites. They sometimes don't show up right away. If your husband is fine, than don't worry about something in your bed. You'll only freak out more and cause the kids to worry. Good luck. Try taking benadryl to help with the itching or hydrocortisone ointment to help them go away.

Last year starting in May I started getting all these bite things on my legs. They looked like mosquito bites, then welts. Anyway, they turned out to be hives. My doctor never figured out what they were caused by (I have a GREAT allergist if this turns out to be the problem), but you might want to check with your doctor to see if what you have really are bites or hives.

Could be ants, spiders, mosquitos. My husband and kids swell really bad from ants. Has
anyone been eating in the bed?

I hope you figure it out.

Are you sure they are bites, and not something such as hives? I would think if something were biting you in bed, your husband would also have some.
