what age is a good age to start ur toddler in his own big boy bed/ r son is 17months

I transitioned my son around 2 and a half because we had hoped his sister would be in the crib soon. He wasn't a big climber. One thing I hadn't realized until I asked around - this is a big deal emotionally for them. You want to prep him ahead of time about the transition (a week was suggested to me). I had no idea this is one of those things that can go horribly wrong and he could end up back in the crib hating the big boy bed.
ht.
I think he is too young right now. He can wait till he is potty trained and might need to go in the night, and/or if he stops needing sides to keep him from falling out. Too young and they wont stay in bed when you want them to. We didnt move ours out of their cribs till about 3. Why rush them.
My son was perfectly happy in his crib until he was 1.5 months shy of his 3rd birthday (I was about 7 months pregnant with his sister). Truthfully, the only reason we put him in a toddler bed was because we were going to need the crib for the baby, and I wanted to give him a chance to get used to the bed before his sister was born. Too many changes surrounding a birth, and this was one I could control.
My daughter is 20 months, and I shudder when I think about the day she'll transition into a toddler bed. She's never tried to climb out of her crib, but I have a feeling she's going to be the poster child for the up-down-up-down-up-down-mommy-can-I-have-a-glass-of-water-mommy-I-have-to-go-potty-mommy-I'm-hungry-etc-etc-etc syndrome that seems to come over some children. I'm also nowhere near ready for her to be able to get out of bed on her own.
When they climb out of their crib as it's not safe for them to be in it. It might seem cute to see them doing it, but oh so dangerous if they fall. This is usually by the time they're 18 months, with one of my grandsons it was 17 months, same as your little guy : )
We always waited until the first time they climbed out of the crib and it became a safety hazard. Between 15 and 18 months.
When he can climb out of the crib. Keep him in as long as you can! Once he's out, he has free reign of his bedroom, and that can make bed time and nap time very challenging.
We put our son in a toddler bed around 2 1/2... he didn't do very well at first... always falling asleep on the floor by his door. We'd put him back in bed and he would be fine the rest of the night. It took almost 6mos before he really stayed in the bed (we put a baby gate on his door). I think if I would've waited and let him pick out his bedding it would've been easier... he really wanted red bedding!
If he's happy in the crib, not attempting to climb out & you don't need it soon for another baby; leave him in the crib. Just like that old saying,' if it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Some kids really like & need the security of a crib & may not do well in a toddler bed at such a young age like your son. They may not know how to deal w/the freedom a bed provides & it can really mess w/their sleep pattern & routine. Our older son slept in a crib til he was 3 & my brother made him a toddler bed. He wasn't trying to climb out & in fact, since he was getting so heavy & tall, I was teaching him to climb in! Our younger son started climbing out about 2 so I had to re-train him to stay in the crib which worked in a few days but by the time he was 2.5 he was on the bottom bunk of the bunks beds. I say keep him in it until you absolutely need him out.
I think 17 mos is too young too. I actually just transitions my son out, he turns 3 next week. My plan was to wait til he tried climbing out of his crib too, but he never did! (and I didn't want to wait any longer bc i wanted to move his baby sister into it)
It was actually not bad, and with a bed rail on, it practically feels like a bigger version of a crib!
