Kid or adult? If adult, football fan?

Kids don't usually care that it's New Years Day, so you have to treat it like you would a birthday any other time of year.

An adult might really just enjoy a day of laying around watching football. If not a football fan, maybe a good movie.

For an adult I would celebrate with family on the day. If it was a child I'd select a day in late January or February to have a party. My 2nd daughter was born Christmas eve and we always had her party with friends in late January. The holidays are so busy but my January there's nothing going on.

If it were my birthday, I would relax at home with all of my favorite things.
My favorite foods.
Sparkling cider or winee.
Rent a couple of movies.
Stay in and be lazy.
Cook a very nice dinner (like steaks, ribs, baked potato w/all the fixings,
rolls w/butter, a fancy salad).
Light some candles (ensuring the kids can't get into them & don't forget
to blow them out later).
Have my favorite dessert (buy it at the store bakery), ice cream or sorbet.
Buy myself a bouquet of inexpensive flowers at the market.
You can even treat yourself to an inexpensive bauble online.
Get cozy w/a blanket or throw on the couch.

I have a friend whose birthday is today, and if the snow lightens up, I'm making a giant sunflower brownie, and maybe a pizza.

One of my friends birthdays is new years eve, so we generally keep it small, I make cake, ice cream, I make mudslides.

My son's is in two days, and I am doing simple cake, ice cream, pizza, maybe some punch(if the fruit isn't too crazy expensive), and his new movies. If I can get it all cleaned up in time, playing all my old records(all my friends are vinyl fans, so it's fun).

Keep it simple, as so many people are burnt out on the excesses of Christmas. If for a child, simple and small, or make it themed for Winter or New Years party poppers and noisemakers, with a cake with "sparkler" candles(that are actually the magic relight ones that sparkle), and edible confetti all over.

I'm a homebody, so I wouldn't want to go out in the madness-plus it's a little late to get any reservations. I think small touches can really add up. If someone made me a cd of good songs, or made a good meal for me (this would really be great-not having to cook), or bought me a book, etc.
Just having someone recognize you by doing some of your favorites is something that both adults and kids can enjoy.
You know-I love funny stuff. If I could play hijinks all day and not have to clean up the mess afterwards I'd be in heaven.

A new year's eve party with Cake, Ice Cream and presents at midnight! Then sleeping in until 'I' want to get up!

My son is a New Years baby, soooooo.......when he was a baby, it was family ringing in HIS birthday, not the New Year of course LOL......at midnight we'd sing Happy Birthday as I walked in with his cake. As an adolescent, family on New Years Eve and a selected date for his friends to share with him at Discovery Zone or some other party place. As a mature young man, he decides what he wants to do on New Years Eve, with friends, girlfriend etc....and we celebrate as a family on the 1st, which is his actual b-day.
