Bathtime Dillema

My 2 year old daughter has a bathtime issue. She LOVES to take baths until it is time to wash her hair. I have tried to tell her to lay back so the water and shampoo don't get into her eyes but she will not listen so I have to just dump water over her head while holding her down. I don't like doing this. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help with the hair washing issue?

What can I do next?

Have you tried one of those rubber visor type hats, I have one and use it on my 10 month old and I think it works great, and it's pretty cheap!! Good luck.

We had this dilemma for awhile as well, we found a visor that he could wear, keeps the soap and water out of their eyes and everyone is happy!!

Best thing you can do is trickle it down their face and tell them to put their head back. When they do, put your hand, in a C and put it on their hair line. then just dump it in their hair. I have a 2 year old and she has learned to just tilt her head back and the water won't get on her face. She does it on her own now! Good luck!

I always wet a washcloth and use it to wash out the shampoo from the front half of my daughter's hair first, and then dump water on the back half so she doesn't get water in her eyes. They also make visors (One Step Ahead catalog, and maybe Babies R Us) that keep water out of their faces. Good luck!

My boys aren't fond of it either. They used to not mind it much, but my mother in law bathed them once and dumped water over their heads. It scared them so much it took me forever to earn their trust again. I nearly bought the visor to use at shampoo time, but they calmed down eventually. I use a very soothing voice, too, and it might help if you get a new bath toy that only comes out after she cooperates at shampoo time. I think bribery can be forgiven in this case! Good luck!

You could get a childsize plastic visor/cap with no top and put that on her while washing her hair to keep water from running into her eyes. Hope this helps.

Hi L..
My daughter used to be like that. I put my hand over her eyes so the water won't get in them. Now, she is much better. I don't know if that is your daughter's problem but that might help.
Have a great day!!

Walmart sells the same bath cup that the onestepahead site sells maybe you can try that. What I did for my 2 yr old daughter is I put a picture of her favorit thing(dora) on the ceiling of the shower and have her look up at it while i rinse her hair. We have to hang it back up alot though because of the shower steam. Hope this helps.

Buy a cheap plastic sun visor for her to wear. It will keep the water out of her eyes.
Then, let it rain softly on her head!

We have one of those removable shower heads that you can hold in your hand. My 2 year old loves it. When it's time to rinse her hair in the bathtub, we turn that on and play with it. She doesn't even realizing I'm rinsing her hair because it's more like a game.

First, teach her to blow OUT while you dump the water. I used a pitcher to dump water over both of my boys' heads until they were old enough to shower with me. Tell her that when she blows out the water can't get in her nose and mouth.

Second, give her a wet, wrung-out washcloth (folded up) to hold over her eyes. It will keep the soap out and give her something to feel protected by.

Good luck!

We have had similar issues at my house!!! My 2 year old daughter has a fit when she gets water in her face from me pouring it over her head. We do a few things to make it easier. First I hold her towel to dry off with in my lap, so when she does get water in her face she knows we can dry it off quickly. Second, I give her a washcloth to hold over her eyes while I pour the water over her head, she likes this. The most recent thing we do is to put just enough water in the tub that she can lay down without her face going under, but most of her hair goes under the water. I play with her hair while she lays on her back and it rinses so much easier! Just try a few things and hopefully something new will catch her attention! Good Luck!

I've never met a kid who likes rinsing their hair! I give mine a folded dry washcloth to put over his eyes. Then I tell him to look up (I usually say look towards the sky or stars or something like that). Then I use a cup to rinse his head. Sometimes I ask him how many times I should rinse it. Then he helps me count the number of cups of water I dump on him.

We have the same problem at our house!! My son cannot stand that, and I don't blame him! But hopefully once they understand what we're saying a little better, they can follow our instructions.

I am sure you want to keep the shampooing a part of the bath, but if it got to be too big a problem, you could do what my mom used to do with us. She laid us up on the kitchen counter with our heads hanging over the edge into the sink. Then she'd have the sprayer to spray the shampoo down into the sink.

Good luck!
