i have a house with a septic system...i noticed the last week that it smells in the lower level bathroom that is hardly ever used...when i was doing laundry i open the bathroom door to get some supplies an was thrown back from the smell...could it be because we don't use the bathroom downstairs???? should i run the water in the sink an flush the toilet a few times an also run the shower???? if i do that, how long should i run the water in that bathroom an how often????

What can I do next?

plumbing has p-traps to prevent sewer gas from backing up into the house. basically the water in the pipe is the barrier. Over time, the water evaporates & te gas gets through so routine flushing (as in running water through the pipes.) will keep fresh water in the pipes & not let it get below a certain level. Probably once a week or every two weeks should be enough. now with septic systems, you should have a company come & empty about every 2-3 years. usually costs about $100. If you don't then the water has nowhere to go and doesn't get to drain properly & you will notice drains draining more slowly. the Ridx helps add microbes to the tank to help eat the waste and with cleaners like clorox, the microbes get killed & so we have to add more routinely. I do so once a month. i just buy generic ridx from dollar general & get for year so I do it on the 16th of every month. hope this helps.

My brother is a plumber...you've gotta get water into ALL drains whether you use them a lot or not....flush the toilet, run water in the sink/shower, whatever else is down there....same with floor drains in a basement or garage. So when you're down there waiting for that spin cycle to end--go flush! lol Just do it once or twice per week.

Just having the door shut will cause the build up of odor. The room needs air circulation. I suggest leaving the door open part way. Keep the lid down on the toilet. Is the room heated? If not put a space heater on low in the room.

I don't think running water would help. In fact it might make the smell worse because the moisture can cause mold to build up. I would check to see if there is already mold and if so scrub it away with vinegar solution or a product made for getting rid of mold.

You can plug in an air freshener or put out a large bowl of potpourri.

Put some Rid-X in your toilet bowl and leave it there.

Sewer gas can explode-better call a plumber-someone you trust.
