hello girls..im 26 yrs old and have a 8month old. i have always been non regular when going to the bathroom like every other day. but when my son was 3months old everything went really bad. i now do not go to the bathroom on my own a dr. prescribed me amitiza to help with going. but the side effects are horrible and i now have to stop taking them. its to the point i do not go to the bathroom for a week or 2 weeks at a time unless i take a laxitive. im not in pain except for bloating when i dont go, this dr also thinks i dont need a colonoscopy cuz of my age. but im begining to think differnet. has anyone else had a problem like this. i was diagnosed with cronic constipationfor no known reason. im sick of my life revolving around this! so not normal.

What can I do next?

Ok I have suffered with this problem all my life until a couple years ago when I saw a new dr who mentioned that it could simply be low magnesium. I went to GNC and got a magnesium supplement just to try it (i was open to anything at that point). IT WORKED I take one tablet everyday and no longer suffer from any constipation issues at all. Just something you might try.

I can totally relate to this. I have IBS with constipation. The only way that I have regular bowel movements is to take one Fiber Choice tablet (I get the orange ones so I don't have to deal with the fake sugars-which also trigger constipation for me. and one stool softener at night. Usually, if I remember to take them, that works and I can go every one or two days. This works for me, maybe it will work for you. Good luck. I know what a pain this is. I am 45 and have dealt with this since I was around 23. Also, you may want to read IBS for dummies. It has a lot of good tips in it.

I have been taking a supplement since March that has helped improve my digestive issues... I also know of several people who suffered with chronic, life-long constipation who have had great results with the same supplement. Let me know if you'd like more info. Hoping you find what works for you!

I think that if there is an issue a colonoscopy may give the doctors and answer to what is is going on. If you are not happy with your doctor go to a different one. Find a gastrointerologist someone who deals with digestive orders. Take the laxatives if it helps you go. Make sure you are drinking lots of water and watch for foods that can bind you up like cheese. A few good supplements to take are fish oil or flax seed oil. Make sure your diet has lots of fiber in it. Eat lots of fruits and veggies. If you are taking any kind of supplement for iron that can also constipate you. Good luck with everything.

I've had a friend with the same problem. The most natural simple remedy was Prune Juice. After being able to go she didn't have a problem afterwards. Another thing to think about is foods that constipate that you may want to stay away from: Cheeses (hard) and Chocolate are the biggest offenders. Hope this helps. Good luck. You may also need to see a nutritionist.

I suffer from IBS. I hate to be graphic but I have had the exact opposite problem for years now. But when I was a child a teenager I suffered from constipation. I wouldn't go for days to a week was the norm.

What I can HIGHLY recommend is eating a bowl of the original Fiber One cereal every morning for breakfast. You may need to supplement with another bowl during the day for the first week to kick start your system if you really want to get things going. Or you can try the bars. I hate to sound like a saleswomen but trust me, it works. Again, I hate to be graphic but my husband and I both ate the cereal as part of a diet to lose some extra weight and we were going like 3x's a day. I have no idea where it all came from. LOL! My sister-in-law ate the bars and was telling me about it also. It's just not as much fiber as the cereal.

I'd give that a try before any more medicines any chemicals, doctors, and tests, etc. We really do not get the fiber we need everyday.

Good Luck!

Does colon cancer run in your family? If it does/ your not sure I would push for a colonscopy. My husband just had most of his colon removed at the age of 33 because he had many polyps in his colon. At the age of 30 he started asking for a colonoscopy but they told him he was to young.

I agree with some advice already given--definitely get a 2nd opinion.

Avoid cheese, chocolate.
Drink LOTS of water (do you?), try a stool softener instead of a laxative maybe, eat a fresh orange every day, add fiber to your diet daily (use a supplement if needed for extra fiber)
Maybe you've tried all of those things already?

Try everything together!

I would get a second opinion from a different doctor. You are right, this is not normal. Push until you get an answer. Good luck.

I have had similar issues... especially when I'm on a low-carb diet. I have 2 simple solutions. 1. Popcorn (fiber)
2. sugar-free chocolate (the sweetener they use causes a mild laxative effect)
I have a few pieces a few times a day and am much more regular.

Good luck!
