Do you have tile anywhere? I chose to use a paint color that matched a color in my accent tile. Remember, especially if this is the room in which you put on make-up, to avoid paint colors that are not flattering to you.
I know in the grand scheme of things this is a pretty lame question, but I need some ideas for my bathroom. We are finally finishing our remodel and I'm at a loss color-wise.
If you had a bathroom with interesting angles, beadboard, and huge trim, what would be your color scheme? Would you select THREE different colors; walls, trim and beadboard? Or would you stick to two? Would you keep the beadboard and trim white and only paint the walls? Errrg! I need to make a selelction very soon and I can't settle on anything!
Thanks for your suggestions!
ETA: The floors are a honey wood.

What is the style of the rest of the house? Country, moder, contemporary, victorian?

I like neutral colors in the bathrooms.
You can accent any way you want, if you go with neutrals. Neutral doesn't mean a white or eggshell colored wall, either.
Our bathroom walls are mocha colored. The floors and shower and tub surround are limestone. Counter tops are marble in the same shades.
I accent with cream. Or white. Or lavender. Or seashell pink. Or sage green. Whatever I want, really... and I do change it around. All I have to change are rugs, towels and qtip containers after all...
The handsoap, well, those come in all colors, and as it runs out, I feel free to buy a different scent (color) if I want--whatever goes with what I have out.
Neutrals also look great with live greenery. So if you like live plants (ferns or orchids or whatever) in your bath, they go well.
I'd keep it in the same color scheme as the rest of your house. If you have nice wood trim, I would not paint it. But if it's the kind that has to be painted, white is a good way to accent it. How is the rest of the trim in your house finished? I'd stay consistent.
For our bathroom we chose a shower curtain that we loved and matched the rest of our house and picked our paint colors from there. The shower curtain is a dark red with gold and blue 'plaid' lines in it. We used the gold color as our paint and used the red for accent towels and rugs. The rest is fairly monochromatic.
How big is the bathroom? Darker colors make a large bath more intimate but a small one tiny. White is great in a small bath but makes a large one antiseptic. I would keep the colors neutral in cooler tones (light taupe and white, or slate blue and white) and add more color with accessories making the room relaxing but adaptable as your tastes change. Only two colors though, three makes the small room very busy.
Hi J. - We remodeled not long ago. I have beadboard in my mudroom, and I kept it, and the area to hang up coats - a cream color, and our wall color is a brownish taupe. We put the beadboard up about 6' on our wall. Then I used oil rubbed bronze everything else to make it look great! I would suggest going with 2 colors only. Since a bathroom is a rather small area you don't want too much going on. You can add a picture or a nice curtain to add to it. Good luck!
In my bathroom, which is kind of small, I have kept the beadboard and trim white and painted the walls Cottage white, which is a kind of creamy white with hints of yellow. I left the ceiling white. It looks great.
I think if you have a larger bathroom, you could probably get away with 3 colors, but make sure they are all within a couple shades of each other so it's not too jarring. A larger bathroom could probably also accept somewhat darker shades. I needed very light colors because the bathroom is pretty small and I needed to give the impression of more space.
I redid mine last summer, when it was incredibly hot and so I chose antique white for the color...I think because the color made me feel cooler at the time from the heat. It's an average size bathroom. The trim is a nice wood. The shower curtain is beige and the bath mats are pale blue. It's plain and simple but clean and fresh looking, I like it.
I love my sea glass walls with white breadboard and trim. It always looks refreshing. You can match the color with your accessories and towels or use blue or sage green or both. I love those colors in a hydrangea. Look in places that sell flowers and see what colors make you happy.
In the bathroom, I chose black granite, white tile and very light mocha walls. My tub is white and the shower curtain is a very decorative one that has brown and creams in it. Our trim is white.
I love the nuetrals because I just put a big vase of fresh, pink flowers on the counter...and it looks and smells so nice.
These basic colors are great for resale value, too.
I have friends w/ hunter green bathrooms, etc...And they painted most of the rms in light colors before they moved. This was rec by the real estate agents.
Personally, I like 2 nuetral colors together.
