How often does your 5 yr old boy bathe? I know when they are young, they don't need a bath every day, but with him starting Kindergarten soon, I'm thinking it's a good idea for him to start bathing every day now so he'll look/smell nice every day.

So What Happened?

Sounds good, thanks everyone! We'll get him on a good nightly bath routine then. He usually bathes with this 2.5 year old sister, but I've been wanting to have them start bathing seperately anyway. I'll bath him at night and do her in the mornings while he's gone, along with her newborn sibling due ANY day now!

I think the responses you are geting depend on climate! Here in MN in the winter, if my daughter bathed every day, she would be dealing with dry itchy skin, and worse. I know I go through a ton of lotion because I shower every day, and I'm still dry and itchy. We have baths/showers every two or three days depending on her activities. If she has a karate sparring class - she gets a shower!

In the summer, she gets a shower/bath/time in a swimming pool pretty much every day because she gets sweaty and dirty.

All my kids ages 15 months to 17 years bathe every night before bed. I do that with all my kids regardless of their age.

As a classroom teacher starting her 19th year, please, I beg you, instill the habit of DAILY bathing in your child, with soap. Hair should be washed every couple of days, depending on how dirty it looks.

I taught jr. high about 8 years ago and one of my classes was awful smelling. Just AWFUL! I finally broke down and had the "please shower daily" talk, if you need soap and shampoo, see me privately, etc., etc. I had one boy raise his hand and say (no, I'm not making this up), "I thought you only take baths on Saturday night before church on Sunday!" My, oh my, oh my.

I teach high school now and I STILL have foul smelling students. And it's not just boys (although they are the primary culprits), it's girls, too. Imagine how lovely class smells when young women choose not to bathe daily, it's their time of the month, they don't wear enough (or the correct) deodorant and their favorite outfit is low slung short shorts and tank tops. Very bad...

These habits are instilled in the early primary grades. Please, save yourself, your child and the school nurse an unpleasant chat/phone call and get into the habit now!

About every other day in the summer, twice a week in the winter. No, he doesn't smell.

99% of the time, my kid bathes every day--the exceptions are late nights...then we skip a day or bathe in the morning.

Good lord, where we live they have to be bathed every day.. It is too hot, humid and dusty..

And yes 5 year olds have stinky heads if they are running around.. Gather a group of them in a closed up class room, the stench adds up..

Make sure he learns to use soap, to clean his neck, behind his ears and between his toes.. Then to make sure NO soap is left on him.. And to make sure he is as dry as possible.. We used to do races to see how fast our daughter could bathe herself or how fast my husband or I could bathe her.. and make sure she was totally clean.. Helped to get her in and out.. fast..

My boys shower every night. They have their 'private shower time'. It got too much having three boys in there at once. Now they all wash themselves, including my three year old (although I have to go over him to make sure). They play in there, get clean, and learn a bit of hygeine independence.

Every 3 days - since he was born - if he bathed more frequently he would have horribly dry red itchy skin. He does swim almost daily in the summer. No he doesn't smell.

We wash our sheets once a week, duvets once a month. Yet somehow, straight out of a bath into a clean bed my son wakes up in the morning in serious need of a shower. He sweats, he thrashes, the dog licks him, he decides to climb under the bed for a lost treasure.

He takes a shower and washes his hair every morning, and he takes a bath every night before bed. Occasionally, I'll have to hose him off in the middle of the day (sports and the like). But for years and years now (since he was a toddler) my 9yo takes a shower in the morning to 'get ready for the day', and a bath at night to get ready for bed.

i'm late chiming in, but showering twice a day for a 5-10 yo seems like alot of water being wasted.

climate again being a factor 3 times a week during the winter, and as needed in the summer. I do like to rinse off from clorine so sometimes it is once a day if we go swimming alot but not in the am to wake up. a washcloth could do that.

every other day. sometimes he will go more often than that, if he gets extra dirty, but not usually. i'm surprised at all these moms bathing their kids every single night. they must not have kids with dry hair and eczema lol.

Depends on 1) dirt level and 2) time. Sometimes all they get is a rubdown with a wet washcloth or sprayed by the hose. I don't worry about the look/smell issue since a they don't really smell that bad in Kindergarten. If they're relatively clean and we're having fun doing something else, just the teeth get cleaned.

Probably about every other day. We don't go outside much so he doesn't get very dirty otherwise, but if we are going somewhere (playgroup/library/museum...) then he gets a bath. Once he starts school, it will be every night.

At that age, we did good getting them to do it 5 days a week. Just get him bubble bath, army men, whatever might make the experience more "fun". Good luck!

during the school year/winter, our dd bathes every other day, during the summer, every day, because she gets a lot dirtier when it's nice outside.
