I always stay right beside him usually playing with toys with him he hasnt fell or anything in the tub I have always double checked water temp that is fine...whats the problem is this a stage ???

What can I do next?

Isn't it crazy how they can totally reverse their opinions so quickly, even at a young age? When my daughter was little she went through a period of this. One thing that helped was to put her in the tub before I put the water in, then turn the faucet on. As long as it built up around her, it seemed less distasteful.

Good luck!

Hee hee Laurie A. Your post reminded me of an episode of 'Rugrats' I saw when I was younger... where Tommy was scared of getting sucked down the drain... lol.

My DD hadn't hit this phase yet, but when my brother got terrified of the bathtub my dad put a large-sized tote in the bathtub and let him take the bath in there. He loved it at first because it was so different... but eventually he got sick of it because his toys 'couldn't fit' (hint hint. lol) in the tote, and would only fit in the big tub. Eventually he started wanting the big tub again. :)

OMG - so crazy isn't it! My son used to love it and from one day to the next flipped out. I thought he was getting burned by the water though we always used a thermometer! He seriously reacted like a wild animal when we tried to put him into the tub. We finally gave up as the trauma was killing us all. He now takes a shower with dad and though he was hesitant to start - he loves it now. I haven't even retried the tub yet and he's now 2 1/2. Good luck.

My 2 y/o son just went through this. Same thing, used to love it, then totally terrified. I just did the bath as quickly as possible to get it over with. It lasted for about 3 weeks and now hes ok again. Where it came from, I have no clue.

We experienced the same thing with our son at the same age. We changed our approach by allowing him to grab some of his favorite toys that he could take in the tub with him (water proof ones of course). We also purchased a fireman water tank with a hose that he loves using in the tub. Now we can't get him out.

This is normal development. There are different things you can try.

Place a wash cloth over the drain.
Do as KN suggested and put him in a dry tub, then turn on the water..
Place him in the tub not facing the drain.
Get in the tub with your back to the drain and bathe with him..

It will pass. He is just becoming more aware of his surrounding and wanting to control it more. He may think he can be sucked aways like the bath water..
