My 6 month old son LOVES bath time. He never fights getting in or out and loves every second he is in there...even when he is getting scrubed. My question is how long is too long for him to be in there? I let him play and then we bath...but how long should he be in the water from start to finish...I don't know how sensitive baby skin is to bath time! Thanks for any insight.

What can I do next?

Hi H.,

I don't really think there is a recommended time limit. My 21 month old LOVES bathtime too so I just let her stay in there until the water starts getting uncomfortable/cool (although she would stay longer if allowed). Your little one may be too young right now, but when they get older, the longer the bathtime the better...thats when I catch up on my reading! The only thing I do recommend is letting him play first then bathe him so that he is not sitting in the soapy water (especially important for little girls).

My little girl does the same thing. She plays and she gets cleaned. Sometimes this take 5 minutes sometimes it takes 30 minutes. I think more than 45 minutes, might be too much. but it is always good that bath time is a fun time!!

At 6 months .. I'd say 15 minutes or so ... I just don't go for long baths .. b/c I can't stand pruney skin .. so I'm sure they wouldn't like it either. My daughter often asks to stay in a bit longer, but I remind her that she's getting 'wiggles' on her fingers and she happily gets out - b/c she hates the way her hands feel with 'prunes/wiggles (as we call it).

That's great that he loves bath time!

Hi H.,

I think a lot depends on how your son responds to water. My first son had excema on his legs pretty bad and I needed to limit time in water. My second doesn't have a problem with it, so we're not in a hurry to get him out. But, I'd say he's probably only in baths for about 20 minutes, maybe.

Hi H.,
I'm not health professional, but I think anything over half a hour is to much bath fun. My son loved his bath time until he became a toddler! Now, he goes into phases of five minutes to twenty minutes max.
Enjoy the time together.

Hi H.,
My son was the exact same way since birth.
He literally cried only 1 time when he was first introduced to the bath and has loved it ever since.
He's now 17 mths old and he can't wait for "bath time!"
I would say 15-20 minutes is a good amount of time.
As long as the temperature's warm enough and he's having a great time, then he'll be just fine!
As he gets a little older and builds up his immune system some more, then I would go for half an hour.
Just don't want the little one to catch a cold!
Have fun with your baby's bath time!
