Bath Time.... - Saint Augustine,FL

My daughter must be the only chid in the world that hates taking a bath. Ever since she started potty training she will say she has to go potty first and will sit on the potty reading books. I have to fight with her every night to get her in the bath tub. Most nights I have to drag her off of the potty screaming. She use to love taking baths but not anymore. I want to make this time more enjoyable for us. I play with her and her sister in the tub and she seems to have fun if she calms down from me dragging her in. We have a song we sing at the end that she loves. Unfortunately, she is covered in sand after daycare so she has to take a bath every night. What can I do to make her take a bath without a fight every night and waiting 30minutes for her to sit on the potty? I don't know if her resistance is becuase she knows it is bed time. She loves to swim and get wet, so she is not afraid of the water and she does enjoy it once you get her in.

What can I do next?

2 suggestions, maybe change it up and pick a different time of day. Doesnt have to be at night time. WHen my daughter was 3 all of a sudden, she said she wants to take a shower. What? no No no no, i loved giving her baths. But she was ready. Then i found out girls, shouldnt take baths after 2 anymroe either. Sitting in the water is more risk for a UTI. ESPECIALLY BUBBLES. So many people recommended bubbles, but i thought was a big nono, maybe an old wives tale?

Hi B.,

Have you tried a bubble bath? My girls would not like to take a bath unless they had bubbles so now that they are older, they don't need to have them anymore.

Try getting in the bath with her! Doesn't work everytime, but more often than not. My daughter loves it most of the time when I do. My daughter particularly hates having her hair washed. So she did the same thing with the potty for a while. She's 24 months!

I would also suggest bath and then quiet free play or night time stories with playful interaction in their bedroom. That will most likely make bath time smoother, but it will probably be a fight later on telling them its no longer play time.

It took several months, but man do we have it down now. Even though I still cheat and when my hubby isn't home, I still go to bed with them.

I totally agree with Ashley. I think this is more control than anything else. My 2.5 year old son will do this with everything, not just the bath. I figure out what things I can do to help make it more his idea. I periodically get new bath toys and that helps. Then I put old ones away so they can be new again in a few months. I also let him pick between two toys that aren't actually bath toys on really bad nights. He has a bunch of those Tonka plastic cars and they do just fine in the bath. I let him choose one to take and that usually works. I bet the bath crayons would be great to, just something to make it exciting so that she will choose to take a bath. I tell him for 30 minutes before hand that after watching TV, TV is going night night and you are going to take a bath. I can't just spring things on him, he hates that. Sometimes I have to resort to withholding something I know he wants or wants to do and tell him that he can't until after he takes a bath. Have something for her to look forward to. I hope something works for you!

Hi, this sounds like more of a control issue than that she doesn't like baths. My son, who is 2.5 years, was doing this for a few weeks where he just didn't want to get into the bath. He would delay, just like you are saying - with the potty or playing or anything he could think of. He would cry and complain when put into the tub... but after getting washed he would play in his tub and be completely happy. And then he would cry when bathtime was over... so I think it may be that she wants to be in control and dictate what she does vs. being told what to do. Maybe if you make it seem like her idea to get into the bath she will be more willing to go... good luck!!

We had the same issue with our oldest child. It was like he thought if he sat on the potty long enough we would forget to give him a bath. My mom said try a shower so we did. That did it. He does not fight the shower at all.

Try the shower. My daughter went through the same thing. She is now back to taking a bath weeknights and taking "special" showers on the weekends.

Hello,
I have a 3 yr. old that never liked to take baths and hates it if I wash her hair yet she loves to be in a pool. Lately what I do is save the baths for the weekend and during the week I have her take a shower with me in the mornings. I place a shower cap on her head and it seems to be working. If she is really dirty I give her a bath and have her take her dolls with her so she can give them a bath.

Have you tried taking a shower with her. My daughter and I love taking showers and we use shaving cream on the shower walls to practice writing letters and drawing pictures. We sing songs and talk - it's our special time. Also I take her to bath and body works and let her get bath gel that she uses on those puffs to wash herself -she loves it and it seems that it is easier for them to use than a washcloth.

Hi B.

How about some positive reinforcement? Make her bath look really fun w/bubbles or something else she enjoys during bath or do bath a little earlier? Distraction in some way may also be a great alternative, make her think something outside of the bathroom is great fun (maybe a 10 min diversion). Just some thoughts.
Have great fun!

Maybe give her something to look forward to after the bath. Something she can only get if she is good and takes a bath with out the fight. Maybe an extra bedtime story, extra cuddling with mom or dad, anything she really likes. Also try bath crayons. My daughter loved them.

Try taking a bath first and then going potty. If she still wants to sit forever then set a timer for whatever time you are comfortable with.

Try the shower. My youngest went through the same thing and bath time was fight time every night. So, him and dad started taking showers instead of bath time and it works great.
My husband has done bath time since Logan was able to sit up without assistance and dad was comfortable doing it without mom's help.
It's their time to bond. Dad's gone all day to work and doesn't get much one on one time with Logan during the week. So this is there time to be guys. It's really kind of funny!
Try that and see if that helps. Probably with a little girl though she should take the shower with mommy and not daddy. Different packaging you know.

Have you tried changing her bath time to see if that works. Maybe do it right when you get home or even before dinner? I know they get messy during dinner, but you might not have the fight the battle because it's not the typical schedule and she might not relate it to bed time. Good luck

My girls are almost 6 and Sara will be two at the end of the month. They are over the baths too since we have a pool. They like to "play in the rain" now. (Take a shower) I let them do it in my shower since it has a door rather than a curtain and they love it, probably uses a ton more water, but at least they are clean.
