Baptizing Our Baby

Neither me nor my husband were raised in a church and we are not currently members of a church, but my husband wants to have our 4 month old son baptized. If he were to claim a religion it would be Lutheran because that's what his Dad was. I went to a Unitarian church for awhile as a kid. Do you have to be a member of a church to be baptized in it? Can anyone offer recommendations on where we can do this? I would be more interested in a more liberal, progressive church rather than a conservative one. We live in FW.

What can I do next?

I agree with the baptism by immersion. There is just too much information in the Bible to do anything else, for Christ was only baptized in this manner as an example of how we should do it.

I also believe that children are innocent in the eyes of the Lord and should not be baptized until they reach the age of accountiblity where they have a better understanding. This the passage where I get my information.

I do think it is wonderful for you and your husband to have the desire to introduce Christ into your child's life.
Instead of baptizing of infants in my church, we give them blessings and they are very special.

No offense, but I have to ask: If you don't go to church and are not religious, why are you having your child baptized? I am not criticizing you, you are the child's mother you can do whatever you want. Just wondering...

Hi S.,

I don't have advice for you, I'm just commenting on Stacy B's response regarding Catholic Baptisms. Wether or not you have a private or "public" baptism depends on what church you attend. Of course, you can do what you did and ask for a private baptism is you choose. Saint Elizabeth in Keller prefer's to do community baptisms with lots of children at one time. Saint Francis in Grapevine performs baptisms at the parent's request. I have never seen a baptism at Saint Francis performed with more than one child, unless they were twins.

We had our daughters baptized in a Catholic church, even though my husband and I hadn't been to church for a while. We definitely weren't members of the church where we had it done (though my Grandpa was). We had to go to a baptism class, so did the Godparents. I would assume if a Catholic church allows it, certainly a Lutheran one would. I would start calling a few churches and ask about their baptisms. In the Catholic church, baptisms are now part of a big service with multiple kids getting baptized at the same time. We had a private ceremony for each of our girls, though. We just contacted the priest and set it up with him. Congratulations on the upcoming baptism! I hope it all works out the way you want!
