My pediatrician always told me that black, brown, yellow, or green poop was all normal. She said you only need to be concerned if you see blood in the stool. I know I asked this question more than once when my son was young!
I am a first time mom. My daughter is 5 months old and we just started bananas with her yesterday. Well, today when she pooped in her diaper, her poop was black. Is this normal? I have never heard of this happening before. I am just scared that it could be an allergic reaction. Any imput is appreciated! Thank you.
Thanks for all of the information. It cleared up within a day, so no worries! I really do appreciate all of the helpful information everyone has provided.

if you do a Google search, or research online about what the color of poop means... there will be lots of info!
I've done this before with my kids when they were babies.
good luck,
Susan
Neither of my kids ever had black poop from eating bananas - and we eat A LOT of bananas in our house.
Sometimes black stools, especially if they're tarry, can be a symptom of other conditions, but both times our kids had them, it ended-up being nothing to worry about.
If you're concerned, call the pediatrician just to be sure it's normal and nothing they might want to evaluate her for.
Isn't it amazing how motherhood has us discussing poop in much more detail than we ever would have before?
I'd say to only give her bananas in moderation. Around the same age, my girl would get soooo constipated every single time she had bananas (even just a 1/2 or 1/4 serving)!! We just kept them out of her diet until she was a bit older (~8months). Now, she loves them but I only give the to her once or twice a week to prevent constipation.
That could be a sign of intestinal bleeding, if it was tarry, I would get her checked out. It could be unrelated to bananas.
Accidentally leave a banana on the counter for a week and see what happens to it. It turns black.
It's probably just coming out that way when your daughter eats them.
Don't be afraid of bananas. They are full of potassium and good things.
My kids never got constipated from them but some kids do and children who are constipated tend to have very interesting colors end up in their diapers.
If it's the first time it's happened, I wouldn't get overly worried.
Does she have a fever?
Is she breaking out with skin blotches anywhere?
Her tummy isn't used to processing bananas is my opinion.
If she seems sick, take her to the doctor but funny colored poo just happens.
Best wishes.
Hey first time mom,
I don't think it is an allergic reaction, if it was you would probably notice a rash and or fever.I would just give your baby a few days to adjust to the new food. If in a few days you are still worried, it can never hurt to call your Dr. Good luck and take care.
K..
My 5 month old daughter ate bananas for the 1st time yesterday & her poop today was like really dark bluish black. Did you find out anything? I'm so worried! Please email me ____@____.com
Yes they can make the poo black , they are also quite hard to digest in little ones so try not to give her too much banana while she is this young , otherwise she could become quite constipated.
black poo usually means getting enough or too much iron. now i don't remember if it was associated with eating bananas but my kids would have black poo too when they were young. i never bothered to call the pediatrician as they were otherwise healthy.
I would think that it just might be difficult for her to digest yet (as she is very young and I am guessing that you are just starting solid foods (i.e., foods other than breast milk or formula). Unless you absolutely have to give her solids at 5 months, I would wait a bit longer - we started our daughter around 6 months (however, keeping in mind that she did not need anything until then as the breast milk was sufficient for her). At first we tried literally a drop of apple juice in water and it gave her green poop (a sign of a slightly upset stomach as the food is unusual), did not continue, let the poop return to 'normal brownish color', then tried some oatmeal mixed with breast milk (very little oatmeal). Bananas and oatmeal are unlikely allergens. Each time we introduced a new food, we would wait for a few days to make sure that digestion is OK (i.e., poop of good color - green is an indication of slight indigestion, black - also might be an indication of being unable to digest). After my daughter was 6.5 months old we introduced mashed bananas. I don't remember any problems with that. It might be that it's a bit early for the solids yet at 5 months. Another thing to consider - doctors frequently tell to give rice cereal first - keep in mind that rice cereal is likely to give constipation. We started with oatmeal and did not have any constipation to go with it. However, you should probably consult your doctor just to make sure that they agree.
Black poop and also, black stains. Pureed banana looks harmless on that cute little white peter pan collar, and then, after it is laundered, black dirty smudges.
But nutritionally wonderful! Where's that bib?!
The same thing happened when my daughter had bananas too! Ick. ;-)
Yes, absolutely. Bananas = black poo!!!
It's been a long time since my kids were that age...but I think it's fine. Don't worry unless she continues to do so. Good Luck!
