I need a fantastic banana pudding recipe-- Not the Jello version.

I prefer a homemade/scratch recipe.

TIA and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Elaine

People always want me to bring this banana pudding! Its not like the old-fashion cooked kind.

1 Lg. box Instant Vanilla Pudding
1 Box Vanilla Wafers
2 cups cold milk
1 8oz. carton cool whip
1 can sweeten condensed milk
8-10 bananas
Line bottom of 9x13 pan with wafers
bananas on top of wafers
Mix pudding with cold milk, fold in sweet milk and cool whip
Pour on top of bananas
Refrigerate for 2 hours
I usually make mine in a glass dish and stick some of the wafers around the edge of the dish and then sprinkle some wafer crumbs on top. Good Luck, T.

My family loves this recipe:

Banana Pudding Supreme

1 - 6 oz. package vanilla instant pudding mix.
2 cups milk
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
16 oz whipped topping
1 – 12 oz. package vanilla wafers
4 to 5 sliced bananas

Combine the pudding mix and milk in a mixer bowl. Beat until thickened, scraping the bowl occasionally. Beat the cream cheese in a mixer bowl until creamy. Add the condensed milk and pudding and mix well. Fold in ½ of the whipped topping. Layer the vanilla wafers, bananas and pudding mixture alternately in a 9 x 13 inch dish until all the ingredients are used, ending with the pudding. Spread with the remaining whipped topping. Chill, covered, until serving time. Serves 12 to 15.

OK...I know this is a late response but here is a recipe that my M. uses that came from an OLD cookbook that was my grandmother's. It is really the best "Naner Puddin'" you will ever have:

MaMaw's Naner Puddin'

3 tbls flour
6 tbls water
dash of salt
1 cup sugar

Make a paste with the above ingredients.

4 cups whole milk or half & half (I prefer the half&half)
4 egg yolks (yep, its rich)

Mix dairy and yolks together.

Combine the sugar paste and the egg mixture in a medium sauce pan and CONTINUALLY STIR at med-high heat until it comes to a boil. It MUST come to a boil or it will not set correctly.

When mixture comes to a boil, take it off the heat and add the following:

1 stick butter (I cut the stick into pieces so that it melts faster)
1 tsp good vanilla extract

Stir together until butter is melted and everything is blended well.

In a casserole dish (or whatever dish you want to use) layer sliced bananas, wafers and pudding mixture until you use about 5-6 bananas and about 1 1/2 boxes of wafers. End with a pretty layer of wafers and fresh, homemade whipped cream (optional)

Whipped Cream:

Pour 1 carton of fresh whipping cream into a mixer bowl (now, when I say fresh whipping cream, I do not mean the tub of the premade slop...fresh whipping cream comes in a milk carton in the dairy case)

Add a pinch of sugar and a little vanilla to taste (its not an exact science) and whip away using the whisk attachment of your stand mixer. You'll know its ready when it looks like...well, whipped cream!

Enjoy!

A little time consuming, but worth it!
1 c. flour
1 c. coconut
3/8 c. sugar
1 stick butter
1/2 bag Pepperidge Farm Chessman cookies
2-3 bananas
1 small box instant French Vanilla pudding
1 c. milk
4 oz cream chees
1 tsp vanilla
8 oz condensed milk
8 oz cool whip

Mix flour coconut, sugar & butter. Cut like pie crust w/knife or fork. Put in a 9x13 pan and bake at 325 for approx 45 min, stirring every 5-10 min until brown. Let cool.
In a bowl, combine milk and pudding mix and blend well, using electric mixer.
Using another bowl, combine cream cheese, vanilla & cond milk together and mix until smooth. Fold into the pudding mixture. Fold whipped topping into the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Put 1/2 into a bowl or dish & break up cookies and place over mixture. Cut up bananas and place over mixture also. Now put the other half over the top of the bananas and cookies. Top with the crumb mixture. Drizzle w/choc syrup if desired.

I have a recipe that my husband has me make every year for his work thanksgiving and christmas parties. It does use jello instant pudding, but the finished product tastes very homemade. I hope you like it too.

1 cup water
1 pkg french vanilla jello instant pudding
1 can eagle brand condensed milk
1 pint heavy wipping cream
1 box nilla wafers
3-4 bananas

In a large bowl mix together water, pudding mix and condensed milk. Place in fridge to chill.

Pour heavy wipping cream in a medium bowl and mix until it starts to become thick.

Once the cream has thickend get other mixture out of fridge and fold the cream into it.

Once mixed well, set aside until needed.

Slice bananas into 1/4 inch slices.

In a large bowl, start layers with nilla wafers then bananas then pudding mixture. Repeat until mixture is gone.

Use extra wafers as topping. I usually crush them and sprinkle them on the top for a better look.

Sorry if this is hard to follow, I don't have the recipe on paper. I do it from memory. Again, I hope you enjoy it.

I always use the one on the back of the Vanilla Wafer box and it is fabulous. It is homemade, and everyone always loves it.

Ingredients:
3/4 cup sugar, divided
1/3 cup flour
Dash salt
3 eggs, separated
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla
45 NILLA Wafers, divided
5 medium ripe bananas, sliced (about 3-1/2 cups)
Preparation:
PREHEAT oven to 350°F. Mix 1/2 cup of the sugar, flour and salt in top of double boiler. Blend in 3 egg yolks and milk. Cook, uncovered, over boiling water 10 to 12 minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in vanilla.
RESERVE 12 of the wafers for garnish. Spread small amount of custard onto bottom of 1-1/2-quart baking dish; cover with layers of 1/3 each of the remaining wafers and sliced bananas. Pour about 1/3 of the remaining custard over bananas. Continue to layer wafers, bananas and custard to make a total of 3 layers of each, ending with custard.
BEAT egg whites on high speed of electric mixer until soft peaks form. Gradually add remaining 1/4 cup sugar, beating until stiff peaks form. Spoon over custard; spread evenly to cover entire surface of custard and sealing well to edge.
BAKE 15 to 20 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool slightly. Top with reserved 12 wafers just before serving.

I never made the egg white meringue for the top, nor do I bake it. I use all of the sugar in the pudding itself rather than saving it for the meringue. It is a delicious recipe!

Hi Elaine,

Paula Deen's is unbelievably rich and delicious. And, fairly easy to make.

http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOO... (but, it does use a box of instant french vanilla pudding).

I have made the same one that Kristine M. sent but added 1 tsp. of banana flavoring. And I double the batch. It is never around more than 2 days when I have company. Huge hit but very rich. Not the Jello version that you have had in the past.

Good luck!
