Bald Spots and Spitting Up.

I have a 11 week old. She is a baldy and has very fine hair. Now I am noticing that in the back of head there is a little area that has seem to lost hair. Now I attribute this to her use of the bouncer, carseat and sleeping on her back. I know I have seen this alot in other babies but is there something I can do. My delema is that she has reflux and she needs to sit up for 30-60 minutes after every meal. I have tried holding her upright in my lap to not use the bouncer but spits up more if I hold her( i guess i move to much or something?). The bouncer is the best thing that helps her keep her food down for some reason. Does this have something to do with the bald spot and are there any other suggestions to keeping her upright? When she sleeps at night I put her on her side (per MD) but she ends up on her back. I use the blocks that prop her up but shes a wiggle worm and ends up on her back anyway. So any suggestions would be helpful!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am so happy to hear I am not the only one. Thank you all for your advice. We changed the formula to Isomil and it is working wonders. She also gets 2 tablespoon of cerel in her bottle and she loves it!! She gobbles it right up! Thank you all!

Hi H.!
My youngest had a lot of problems with bald spots, too. She was constantly looking around the room and every time she moved her head, she'd rub more hair off! It eventually grew back. When she got old enough, we put her on her tummy for playtime and that helped a lot. (That probably doesn't help much if she's really spitty, though) We also found if we put her in the walker with pillows around her, she stayed upright without rubbing her head on anything.

Good luck!

This is not a big deal. She is fine. When their hair is that fine it can't handle much so it breaks. Don't worry about it. It sounds like you're doing just fine. It will grow back and when she starts dating you'll have something to tease her with. The spitting up sounds pretty normal for reflux. Sometimes you can stop them before they are full and there is less spitting up. Good Luck!

Hi. I am a mom of an 11 month old. My son had reflux as well. He is just now starting to grow out of it. He also had the bald spot issues. It was really hard to keep him off of his back, because like you said, he would always wiggle back. The bouncer was the best place for him after he ate. But when he wasn't in the bouncer we had to just keep rotating him. If he would flip, we had to turn him back over. It's tiring, I know, but it was the only way to deal with it. Eventually, her hair will grow back.

I agree with the other moms. One other suggestion is to make sure you have her spend time on her belly every day (when she hasn't eaten recently). This will help her strengthen the muscles used to push up and roll over. Once she is able to roll over she won't spend as much time on her back rubbing that hair off.

The bald spot is from laying/sitting around all the time. Don't worry about it. Before you know it she'll be sitting up (usually around 6-7 mths) and her hair WILL grow in. Both of my girls had the bald spot and they now both have beautiful thick hair! They also both had reflux, my youngest (2 now) was actually diagnosed with GERD (Gastro Esophical (sp?) Reflux Disease at 3 mths. My oldest slept on her stomach and my youngest slept in her bouncy seat until the meds. (Zantac & Mylanta-cherry flavor) we started giving her helped to calm her little tummy. Maybe get one of those boppy pillows or one of those Bumbo Sitter seats that looks like modeling clay. You can order it online from Target.com for about $35+shipping. It comes in yellow or blue. It helps them to sit up without falling over.

The hair loss on the back of the head is totally normal. Don't worry about it. We used to say my daughter had "Monk hair" because she had a ring of dark hair near her neck but a blank band above that where her head rubbed against the bed.

If it bothers you, put a cute hat on her.

My son is 4 and a half months old and also has reflux. After he ate or when he slept I always put him in his car seat. He slept at night in his car seat until he was 3 months old. After that I just put one side of his mattress up(with pillows or just move one side of the frame up). My son has tried all the reflux medication and the only one to work is prevacid. The bald spot. Both my kids had it. I believe all babies get it because they sleep on the back and they are always rubbing their head either on their car seat, your arm, the mattress. Eventually their hair grows fuller and you never notice. O yeah and make sure your child gets an upper G.I. down so they can make sure his esophagus is not damaged. I had a bad docter and I basically had to research everything myself and by the time my son was 3 and a half months old I demanded a second opinion because the docter said he had colic. Turns out the either docter put my son in the hosiptal over night. My opinion is there is no such thing as a baby with colic. There is always a reason.
