Bad Cold and No Appetite

My 20 month old daughter started daycare 2 weeks ago and already has a bad cold. we already took her to the pediatrician and he told us to do the same things were already doing (cool mist humidified, liquids, saline, aspirator, head raised while sleeping, etc.) plus he prescribed a cold medicine to help her congestion and cough. She tested negative for the flu and H1H1. I use the medication sparingly and only at night so she can breathe while she sleeps. The problem is for the past day and a half she has had very little to eat. She doesn't want to drink her yogurt shakes because her nose is stuffy and she is breathing through her mouth. Last night she did eat 3/4 a slice of NY Pizza and this morning an egg and cheese omelet but just bites of other things here and there. She is such a petite little thing already (maybe 21.6 pounds) I am afraid that she is not eating well. What can I do to get her to eat when she is sick. I have tried her favorite foods already but she doesnt show much interest. She has had the cold since last Monday and Sunday we took her to the pediatrician. How long should I wait to go back again?

I can imagine how painful it is to watch your little one suffer. I want to point out though, that you are trying to feed her dairy products which only add to mucous build up in her system. Clear liquids, jello, soup, and greens would be much better for her system. Has she increased her vitamin c intake? Have you tried rubbing baby Vicks vapo rub on her chest to help her breathing? It works wonders. I would wait another few days but change her diet to no dairy and very little sugar to help her. Also, tapping gently with your fingers on her chest can help build up the immune system and break up congestioon. You can do it too and make it like a game....for you it is more like pounding on your chest with fists like Tarzan and her, little taps. Make it a game.
Good Luck,

I wouldn't force her to eat when she is sick. Little bites of things here and there are perfect. Just offer her nutritious and varied snacks / mini meals throughout the day, and that should be fine. She'll regain her appetite when she feels better.

If her nose is stuffy, avoid giving her dairy products - that will make it worse. Yogurt, pizza, and cheese omelets are no-no's!

Hi L.:

She's eating mucuos-producing foods (pizza, cheese, yogurt), which is adding to the problem, plus did you research or was told the negative side effects of the medication?

I think I see why she doesn't want to eat. Children and babies know intuitively what makes them feel good or bad. Too much dairy! If she's that congested, the cheese and dairy are just making it worse. Doctors will deny a connection, but dieticians and nutritionists as well as any professional singer will tell you that dairy products cause an increase in mucous. Even eggs can do the same. Try dairy free for a week and you should see a difference.
