Bad Circumcision - Raleigh,NC

Does anyone have any insight on a circumsicion redo? My son was circumcized at the hospital and it did not take. It looks like he was not done. So the pediatrician is recommending we see a urologist. Does anyone have any experience with doing a circumcision under local anesthesia for a 20 day old baby? Also, what should we do in terms of paying the bills? I dont think we should have to pay for any of this but especially the incomplete job done at the hospital by the OB.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't do it. My husband is not circumsized and it doesn't bother him or me. My grandson would have been done. But my daughter didn't because he had a rough birth and thought he went through enough. In the time since as she's been thinking it over, she decided not to do it at all. I know a friend who's son decided he did want it done. He had it done as a teen.

I say leave it up to him later.

I'm not sure how to help with the bills, but my baby's skin healed funny and actually reattached. Twice. He had to have it redone twice, with a local anesthetic both times. He didn't even notice a thing. There was no crying or anything, so don't worry about any pain for your son. He'll be fine!

I would not have it done. There is no medical reason to have it done at all. Neither my husband or son have been cut. I would just leave well enough alone. Unless this is for a religious reason, which I would assume it is not as you did not have a Bris, just leave it alone.

I wouldn't do it. Then again I wouldn't have done it the first time. More people aren't doing it now than ever before, and many studies show it's not necessary. Please read more about the pros and cons and reconsider!

I thought the purpose of this site was for parents to be able to offer other parents support!?!
I just wanted to say that I am sorry that out of the 9 responses you have already gotten, only 1/3 of them answer your question, while the other 2/3 didn't. It is sad that you came here for advice only to have your parenting decisions questioned.

What's the deal, ladies? She wasn't asking our opinions on circumcision...if you don't have an answer to the actual question, would it not maybe be better keep your opinion to yourselves :) Just my two cents.

back to the question at hand, I have never experienced this or heard of it, but I would think there would be at least some accountability on the doctor who performed the procedure's part. I would certainly feel nervous about a new baby having any anesthesia, and I would be sure to thoroughly check out any physician coming anywhere near my child. Whatever you do, it will be the right thing for you, your baby, and your family. Good luck to you, and I apologize for those of us who didn't seem to 'understand' your original question.

Hello L.--

My son is 25 months and has the same problem. I took him to a urologist and they said in time, he would be okay. They have me put a cream on him twice a day to thin the skin and have me pull it back. I do see some change, but I was reassured that he would be okay. My sister in law whose son is now 17 had the same problem. Apparently, he is fine now and had no surgeries. Do you feel his is that bad? Maybe get a second opinion.

See the urologist and ask LOTS of questions. If the urologist thinks that this is something that is going to cause problems now or later on in his life than by all means have it corrected. If it's an appearance issue only than I vote leave it be, penises are funny looking anyway. :)

You didn't state why you would have it redone (or done the first time) so I can't answer if you should have it redone. My son is intact and I'm really happy with that decision. I know very few boys in his school who were cut. It seems like with this generation fewer and fewer boys are being circumsized.

Is there a medical necessity for your son to be circumsized? If not, why put him through the pain again? Even under anesthesia, he will eventually have pain as the drugs will wear off and that very sensitve area will have to heal.

I would go see the urologist as recommended. You should at least get his opinion on whether or not to go the surgery route. At this point, would it be better to leave it as is, or would that cause further problems down the road? Can something be done to correct this without surgery?
Also, speaking from experience, it is possible that it wasn't a bad circumcision, they just didn't tell you everything you needed to know about how to care for it. At every diaper change, before applying the petroleum jelly, you should be gently pulling the skin back so that it doesn't start to re-adhere. They only told us about using the petroleum jelly. All is fine now. My son ended up having to have surgery for a hydrocele, so they fixed the circumcision at the same time. Although, he was about 2 years at the time.

I would talk to the OB and hospital about billing for the first one. The OB would probably have to not charge for his service but you may still have to pay for the tools/equipment used at the hospital.

i would go and have it redone. while he is still young. it can cause problems later on.especially since the first one was not done right. i would tell them that you feel that they should pay for it since they didnt get it right.
