Backyard Smells

We seem to have many neighborhood cats who enjoy hanging out in our backyard. We have a cat, he is an indoor cat, and I think they come to taunt him :). Anyway, I recently noticed that our backyard smells like cat! YUCK! I have two questions, 1) is there a way to get the cats to not come in our backyard and 2) how do we get rid of the smell?

What can I do next?

Dear M.:
Is it legal to shoot them in Texas?

My ex-wife's neighbor took her cat to the shelter, since it was outside and unsupervised all the time. My son cried, but I explained to him that the neighbor was right. If you don't take care of your pet and contain it, it may become a burden to others.

Regards,
W.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for...

A few years ago, my sister lovingly referred to me as the "cat lady". We were sitting at my kitchen table, and all of a sudden, we started to hear a roar of cats meowing that only got louder and louder. She asked what it was, and I told her that I had missed the "feeding time".

I opened my back door, and there was at least 50 cats out there! I guess I had just grown used to it. (This story makes me sound like a nut job...)

You see, I am a sucker for the stray animal. I imagine it so hungry and lonely and sad... so I had began taking food out there every day. The food ranged from hot dogs to real cat food. Obviously, one cat spread the word to their buddy and so on and so on, until the entire neighborhood of strays were coming to my house to eat... every day.

Then, one day, something appeared on our front porch. It was a lovable puppy. So, of course, I took him in. "Our" cats never came back.

So, my answer to you is to get a dog! See, I told you that you probably would not like my answer!

There is a natural product on the market called Shake Away.
I know you can get the product on-line but you may be able to find it at a do it yourself pest control place if you can't locate it at either Home Depot or Lowes. As for getting rid of the smell I'd just saturate everything with water and hopefully the remaining smell will go away with time. Good luck!!

Another thing to try to keep them out of your beds is chili powder. You can buy a big container of it at Sam's and sprinkle it over your flowers beds. It doesn't hurt your plants or the animals, but the cats don't like it. You have to reapply it regularly especially after it rains.

I know in our small town the animal control officers wont do anything about stray cats, but you can get a cage from them that catches it and either take them away or give them to a shelter. Good Luck, remember once you feed them even if its one (they will bring more) you cant get ride of them, they go where the food is.

We have the same problem w/ cats. We had 2 indoor cats, but we got rid of them. Then about a week later, this pitiful black cat showed up at our back door, so I fed her. Every day.... Now we have like 5 cats that come around, all male, and they're "marking their territory" all around our hous. I've tried calling animal control, but the city I live in is trying to tell me that there is no animal control program!!!! Crazy....

My suggestion - try to get the pound or animal control to come around and get the strays in your neighborhood. I don't think that there's any way to get rid of the smell outside - maybe spray some vinegar, but eventually the smell will just go away.
