Babysitters - Boise,ID

So what do babysitters get paid these days? My husband thinks I'm too cheap, but I think he's too generous. We just had one here tonight for 2 hours, and he wanted to pay her $25. Maybe I'm out of touch, but that seems like a lot of money.
I'm not an old fart yet, and when I babysat, I got $3 and hour. On occasion, I made $4. I guess that's why $12.50/hr seems like a whole lot.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, everyone. We've only ever hired two babysitters, and both say how easy our kids are. They LOVE babysitters and behave much better for them than they do for us.
I talked my husband down to $15 for the two hours. The girl (17) tried to refuse, saying that it was too much fun to count as work, but I told her to take it home and put it in her college fund. She really wanted to do it for free! AND she did our dishes, which was insane. Not just the dishes the boys used while she was there, ALL our dishes!
Anyway, thanks for helping me put a finger on the pulse of babysitters in 2008.

Hi S., your husband is VERY generous. We don't go out much, but the last time we did, we planned on paying $4/hr. We were gone about 3 hours, probably a little less, but we rounded it up to $15 because our sitter is great! She is one who will color, play games or whatever the kids want to do. She doesn't get on the phone, and didn't turn on the T.V., even though we said they could watch a movie from our kid selection. My best girlfriend takes care of a little baby during the week, and only gets $4/hr. You can google this topic and find out what the going rate in our area is and get a lot of good info. I did that, which is how we decided on the price we did last time. I'm not cheap either, but it already costs an arm and a leg to go out now days, and if your kids aren't difficult to take care of, and you are only going out for a couple of hours for dinner or whatever, $25 seems high.

Yes, I agree with the Kate P. We pay about $4-4.50/hour too. I think you have to take into consideration how many kids you have and how difficult they may be to watch. I don't want to short-change a good sitter either.

babysitters fees greatly depend on where you live. Like you i made about 3 to 4 an hour and that was 10 years ago. I pay my babysitter 7 an hour because she is cpr and first aid certified, but she's only 15. And like me she only asks for whatever the family can afford to pay her. Not all people are that considerate anymore. I recently moved for Nantucket, Ma where the rate for one child was 10 an hr and 15 an hr for two. Which was nice for me being in the childcare bis but not so great when i had a baby and wanted to go out or considered working again. Sometimes you can ask your sitter what their rates are or you can tell them ahead of time what you will pay them. If they don't like it, find someone else. It also depends on their age and certifications. If it's an uncertified teen don't feel cheap about paying less. Adults with more experience should get a little more but not that much. And yeah 12.50 an hour seems a bit much to me, unless you are living in a city that is full of rich people and the cost of living is high. My advice, talk it over with your sitters, ask what the charge and decide, based on all the info i gave, what you think is fair and affordable.

We pay $10 an hour for 2 little girls (almost 3 and 15 months). I agree that if you are paying younger sitters you can get away with less...we pay $8 an hour for our neighborhood girls with less experience. It seems like a lot, but it's worth it to find someone with a ton of experience and that cares a lot for your kids. To me, it is worth the extra money to get the best care for them. With that said, I have neighbors that do $5 an hour with a tip on top of the total. Good luck!
