My husband and I will have to be gone probably over 2 nights (Monday and Tuesday). Hubby may be back late Tuesday night. My kids are 15, 13, and 5. I am going to hire one of my regular babysitters to watch them. She is an adult. She will pick them up after school at 3, stay overnight, and get them to school on Tuesday morning (3 different schools). Then she will pick them up again at 3 and stay with them until hubby gets home on Tuesday.

What would be a reasonable rate of pay?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I think it is a bigger imposition to ask friends to have my kids over for that long, especially during school when they have to get their own kids up and ready and picked up and fed, which I know is not easy. The lady who will do this for me regularly house sits for a week or more so she has been in my house for much longer than 2 nights. Plus we have pets that she will care for. When she house sits she also cleans my carpets, windows, etc. This has gone on for more than 5 years. So trust is not an issue and the kids know her well. My oldest has swimming after school, my middle child has a class, and my youngest needs to have a babysitter anyway so I would be paying for her one way or the other. I called her yesterday and should hear back today.

I would ask her first what she would charge for this. I myself would probably expect about $200 for this. I would not plan on the hubby might be home. Just plan 2 nights and go from there. She will be the person on call during school hours also yes? so if a kid gets sick and needs to be picked up I would assume she will be picking up. You may be surprised though as she may say oh how about "x" which will be less than you thought. But keep in mind if you think you might need this more often then offer a little more.

I would say about $100 per day. Other people mentioned sending the older two to a friend's house. That would be fine but you'd still need to pay about $100 per day. That's my gut feeling and if you are in a major metro area, it could be more.

I can't imagine hiring a babysitter for teenagers who are legally old enough to babysit someone else.

I would let the older ones choose a trusted friend to stay with and then let the younger one, I assume kindergarten age, to either stay with a friend too or to go with a relative. If you don't have a relative close by then perhaps having the child go to a babysitter is the best option.

But no way I would spend my money on a babysitter for the older kids.

I have no idea. I would send the 15 and 13 year old to a friend's home and hire a seperate friend for the 5 year old. I don't like folk in my home that long all alone...
