I was just wondering if anybody has experienced a child/baby with c-diff? After a VERY long time of having on and off again diarrhea, my baby was finally diagnosed with this today. He did not have any other symptoms that were associated iwth c-diff like fever, cramping, etc. He has been very happy, eating and drinking well, and sleeping great so thus the reason they never ran tests until I begged them too. He was on antibiotics for a long time and quite often for ear infections so this is where they believe it came from. What did you do for your child? Did it reoccur? Any other thoughts of suggestions. Thank you!

What can I do next?

My oldest had it and they just gave her a 5 day supply of meds for it. Hers was also caused by to many antibiotics, we live in a household of 4 and nobody else caught it, so talk to your doc about some meds for it and go from there..... good luck! Also I would look into ear tubes they did wonders for my youngest and only do antibiotics once a month at the most cdif is not fun... lot of cleaning and angry kiddo, LOL! again good luck!

Hi R.,

Unfortunately, yes. I see you posted in January 2009, so I hope your child is doing better now. If you still need some suggestions, please see the posting I just made in response to a question about intestinal health--here is the URL:

Hi Lisa!! What a challenge. I have no had a child with c.diff but I am a nurse and have dealt with many adults that have c.diff. Now I now at work we have to wear a gown and gloves to make sure we do not spread the c.diff to others because it is very contagious to others. So I don't know if the Dr said to wear gloves or not, but I sure would as a precaution for other kids and other adults around you. Also if someone else changes the diaper they should wear gloves to and wash their hands really well.

C. Diff can be very uncomfortable causing cramping and a lot of diarrhea. Make sure your little ones stays changed every time they have diarrhea because it can cause so much soreness and even excoriation to the skin to cause it to break open and be oh so painful. Use a barrier cream to keep moisture out with each diaper change. Make sure they stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet. Don't do citrus, tomatoes, spicy foods, or juice because that will make the diarrhea more acidic. Having diarrhea can really take a lot out of the adults and they little ones are even more vulnerable to dehydration and weakness. Pedialyte (or making your own, you can google a recipe) is a good idea to replace lost electrolytes. Have them take it easy and rest a lot to regain strength.

I would assume the Dr put them on a medication such as Flagyl to try to get rid of teh C. diff? Sometimes it takes a while to get rid of it. Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

I would recommend you put the child on a probiotic powder that will help reinoculate the baby's intestines with good bacteria again to fight the overgrowth of C-diff. Also, a little nutmeg in something is absolutely fabulous for diarrhea.

Lisa,

I haven't had a baby with this, but from what I have read, it can be pretty contagious, and you should all be washing hands frequently--especially after diaper changes and before preparing food and eating food or snacks.

Also, probiotics are helpful for this, from what I have read. You can get powdered probiotics from the health food stores and mix with breast milk, formula, or baby food (depending on how old your baby is--you don't say in your post.) I used probiotics with my baby, just as a preventative from birth on, and I think it helped her to be healthy in general. I would try big doses of that, and see if that would help clear things up.

Good luck with this tough situation.
