My daughter is 3 months old and she weighs 15 lbs. and 25 in long. When I took her to the doctors recently, they took her weight and measurement 3 times! The doctor told me that my daughter is ABOVE average on everything. She made me feel like i feed her too much and that i'm doing everything wrong. She eats 4-5 bottles a day with about 4-6 oz each time. Is that too much? Does anyone else have a little 'big' baby? I need some adivce...please help.

What can I do next?

Congratulations first-time mommy! All 3 of my kids have been "above average" by 3 months of age. Two were even born a month early and still were "above average" by 3 months old. Nothing to worry about. Every child's growth patterns come and go at random. Just feed her and she'll let you know when she's had enough--babies don't overeat the way we adults do.

Just to reinforce that everything is probably alright-

My baby was-
11 lbs 1 oz and 21.5 inches at birth
15 lbs 14 oz and 25.5 inches at 2 months
And 21 lbs 7 oz and 31.8 inches at 6 months

Because my baby didn't immediately gain back the weight he lost after birth, my peditrician at the time had me in a panic and told me my baby was going to end up in the hospital. He also wrote "failure to thrive" on his chart and told me to stop breastfeeding him. Breastfeeding was something I personally decided was best for my child so I was devistated.

I was a new mom and my hormones were still alittle wonky. I cried and cried and thought I was a failure and that somehow my baby was hurt and it was my fault.

After some research and reflextion, I decided to not follow his instructions and switched to a different pediatrican in the same office. A few visit's later we were in the office for a regular check up. The new doctor was looking in the chart and said, "That…..um…..failure……to thrive……….diagnosis (insert really long pause) was probably because he didn't gain all his weight back after a week? I mean it's not THAT big of a deal…." The new doctor looked perplexed. He obviously had a thriving baby in front of him who is probably the biggest baby he's seen in awhile.

I don't have a fat baby. I have a big, tall, healthy, happy baby. It sounds like you have a big, tall, healthy happy baby too.

awwwe, your baby is probably perfect! Dont worry so much about it, and if the doctor is so concerned, he should give you some specific instruction on how to alter your baby's diet. I think babys are cute chubby. My baby was at the 95th percentile for everything. One thing you might want to think about is is there are any tall genes that could be in your baby's dna. because if there is, chubby is perfectly normal! I know someone who feeds her baby every three hours on the dot and has for the last 9 months. The formula you're feeding your baby might be affecting him, so maybe switch to something else. But, I dont' see anything wrong with your parenting skills. You are a great mommy. You just have a michelin baby, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that!
My daughter went through a few fat phases too, its normal and cute, I think:0) Tell your doctor that if they are going to label your child as an overweight baby, they need to tell you how to alter his diet, its only fair. And its important to remember that they can look at the average child and compare all they want, but every child is different. I got comments from my grandpa about my daughter being overweight, and I nearly took his head off for even suggesting it. Nobody calls her fat as long as I can help it. She is going to get enough of that nonsense when she gets older, and I will protect her from people like that as long as I have the power to speak for her. I bet your baby is perfect, don't you let anyone tell you different. They are going off of a peice of paper and a chart. nobody knows your baby as well as you do:0) stick with your gutt instinct, it is the best judge you have on anything.

EVERY child is different. I have big kids and not fat. But at 3 mos they were about that size. They just grew very fast and it was amazing! My kids are still big but my son is not fat just a tall 3 year old and my daughter is 2 and a little chunky. Once she starts moving she'll slim down! My son was never even on the charts for height and always like 95th% for his weight.

My son was 8 lbs 10.2 oz and 21 inches long when he was born and I think he was about that much at 3 months too. But yes, he did get skinnier when he was 2 years after we switched him to 1% lowfat milk (mainly because whole and 2% was giving him mucus). Anyway, he's 3 years old now, 3 ft 3 in tall and 35 lbs. My SILs son is 14 years old, and 5'10" already not sure about his weight, so I figure he'll be about that much then. My husband is shortest of his brothers. His youngest is 6 ft 3". I think Luc might take after him.

dont feel bad about thinking your baby is to big, mine is perfect exsample of how fast babies can grow! my son was born 6 weeks early & weighed ONLY 3.2lbs & was barely 16 inches, now at almost 9 months old hes 23lbs & 30inches....even his dr is shocked by how fast he grew & even said hes more then caught up, so like everyone say every baby is different.

If your Pediatrician really made you feel that way, then you need to dump her like a hot potato. Believe me, this is merely the first of many issues you will undoubtedly have with her.

A Pediatrician should be someone you trust. Someone that makes you feel totally comfortable in your choices as a parent. They should be encouraging, supportive, and endlessly patient. Most importantly, they should truly care about the well-being of your child.

There are TONS of Peds out there that fit the bill, and the sooner you find one, the better off you and your daughter will be.

My son was always BIG as well. He was even over the 100th percentile in his weight for some time and has always been near the top for height and head size as well. He is now 2 and has thinned out a lot. He is still in the 95th percent for height but has leaned out to the 65th percent for weight. I am not sure how much he was eating because I was breast feeding so I can't help you there. I would say to not worry about it though. I think that babies will eat what they need and if she is wanting that much food I would give it to her. It is not like you are feeding her bad foods that are making her heavy. I say give it time and it will work itself out.
