Its called a Moby, and generally they are pretty cool, but I would recommend a mei tei (made by Baby Hawk, or Freehand). They are so much easier to put on and manage.
Does anyone know what the long scarf-like thing is called that you wear to carry your baby and allows for your hands to be free? Thanks for your responses.

Baby sling or a pouch. There are MANY different varieties, some are easier to use than others. My "Kangaroo Pouch" was so invaluable to me that I'm saving it for when my girls might someday have babies.
wearmybaby.com will show you how to make them and like someone said save you money.
Not sure why one poster said the Moby does not have many options, i LOVE mine and it has lots of ways to use it, you can wear baby in front. as they get older on hips and even back. Also great for nursing...
I believe it is called a sling.
Just got this email on baby sling deals and thought you might be interested

You can make your own sling or wrap. It is really easy and a lot cheaper than buying one. The info is at www.wearyourbaby.com. I made the no sew wrap for my now 5 year son for $5.98 and I plan on pulling it out for baby number 3 in a few months.
It's called a Moby Wrap. You can see pictures here. http://www.bosombuddies.com/index.php?main_page=advanced_...
There's a bit of a learning curve, but it is so flexible you can keep using it as your baby grows.

It is called a baby sling and it is wonderful! I didn't use mine much with my first baby but my second was SUCH a fussy baby and needed to be held almost constantly, the baby sling was a total life saver with her (she is 5 now and is incerdibly well behaved now!) I used it with my third too and he loved it, it allowed me to go on school field trips with my older kids classes and volunteer in their classrooms because as soon as I put him in the sling he would go right to sleep and I could do almost anything since my hands were free. When the baby gets a little older and holds his or her head up another type of baby carrier like a snuggli can be great too, my son used a snuggli from 6-9 months. There are many different brands and styles of slings, I have used two different brands and they were both pretty good, now I can't remember what they were though since I gave them away to friends since my babies outgrew them! If you can find a store that has a couple of different brands and try them out that would begood, it takes a bit of getting used to at first but it is worth the effort because it will make your life so much more convenient in the long run. Best of luck!
I have a sleepy wrap which is similar to what you are describing but is made out of a stretchy material. I prefer this as it feels more secure to me.
I think you are looking for the Moby Sling. It can be worn many different ways to carry your child in different positions.
We bought ours from a Boulder company. The sling is called the Sleepy Wrap and it works perfect - even up to our 18 month old. :)
It is called a baby sling. There are a few brands out there of baby slings. Totally love the Maya wrap. It seems to have more option for adjustment and position as opposed to the Moby. The closer and more snug the baby is to your body, the easier it is on your back and the more comfy the baby... the Maya wrap allows that, as well as more position changes available as the baby gets older (and has an optional breastfeeding cover...)
I highly recommend a sling. The babies LOVE it- all four of mine, and so many of my friends have used them, too. I love baby wearing myself, too! My husband used it all the time, too. it was a lifesaver for us.
I love my Moby Wrap!
There are several different kinds. The really long one I think you're referring to is called a Moby Wrap. I've a friend who enjoys hers.
My personal favorites for baby wearing are the Maya Wrap (a ring sling) and the Ergo Baby Carrier.
There are several of them out there. The 2 I know about most are quite different from each other. The one like is called a sling and it is a piece of fabric that is sewn into a circle. I got mine from sevenslings.com and they have alot of promotions out there where you can get it for free and just pay shipping and handling for it (sorry I lost the latest free code i had). The other one is a Moby Wrap and my friend swears by it. It is a long scarf that you use to tie around the baby and yourself, allowing you to position the baby in different ways. I am not sure where you can buy them from, I think they have a website but I am not sure what it is. I know that there are websites out there that have instructions on making them and they are quite simple to make, you just have to buy the fabric. Hope this helps
You might be thinking of a Moby Wrap.
If so, I'd like to offer an unsolicited suggestion ;)
Moby wraps are pretty expensive. However, they're very easy to make (since they are just a long, double sided piece of stretchy fabric). You might try crafting one yourself, if you have the time, desire and ability! A friend of mine made a wildly patterned one for me. She used linen on one side and jersey on the other. I much preferred it to the "real" wrap I tried on, because of the aesthetics and the sturdier nature of the linen she used. The wrap she made has lasted through three babies (I passed it on once my little one grew out of it).
