Baby Vision

What month is baby vision considered to be completely developed?

Mine is 9 months old. He always responded to me while I talked to him from the kitchen - smiles and comes crawling towards the kitchen. But when I did this couple times as soon as I get back from work (when he hasn't seen me yet) he looks and then turns away.I don't think he realizes it's me. He comes to me as soon as I get in the living room. I am wondering if he actually can't see well. Both my husband and I are short sighted , and I am getting worried if he is too. I have seen some babies wear glasses. Am I worrying too much? Do you think I need to get him checked? I am wondering how they do it with babies. Thanks!

What can I do next?

I happened to have my son with M. (he was only 6 months old) when I had my last yearly eye exam. My eye doctor told M. that I should bring my son in for his first eye exam at 9 months since they can see more at 9 months than at 12 months (which is when I thought I was supposed to first bring him in)

The exam is quick and he uses some lights and toys to see how he was following them with his eyes. He also dilated his eyes (different drops than what adults get) then check the his eyes again with some lights. My son sat on my lap the whole time.

I would defintely get him checked...it can't hurt! Both my boys would spot M. like a hawk across the room!

I read in a parenting magazine, that babies have adult like vision by 10 months. Now, parenting magazines aren't always totally accurate...but that does sound about right. My son seemed to have great vision by that age. Take him in to your pediatrician and see what he things. It can't hurt, either way!

I dont mean to scare you, but I would definetly get it checked. We had no genetic issues with vision in our family, but my son was diagonsed with certain visual impairments when he was 9 months old and we were not aware of it until then.

I would get him checked. If anything turns up, you may want to followup with a pediatric opthamologist. The earlier problems are identified, the better. Some visual impairment have to be corrected before a child is 4 years old.
