Baby's Very Red Cheeks

Hi there,

My little guy often has one very red cheek, sometimes both. I thought it was saliva (from chewing on his hands) that was irritated by cold weather, making his cheeks chapped. But now it's warm out, so I don't think it's that. His skin is dry there, but the redness comes and goes, worse in the evenings, like he's flushed (but he's not too hot). Have any of your kids had this? He's otherwise fine, and he's pretty much always had this, so I don't think he's unwell. I mentioned it at the last Dr. apt. and she didn't seem to think it was important.

Oh, he's exclusively breast fed (we're introducing solids this weekend!) and I've eliminated dairy and nuts because they seem to bother him, so it's not from that type of allergy. I haven't eaten anything else funny.

Thanks for any ideas!

Oh, I forgot to write his age... he is 6 months old and yep, he's teething (has 2 so far).

What can I do next?

You MAY have been on the right track thinking about allergies. "I haven't eaten anything else funny". My son was the same as an infant (red cheeks) and once I started him on solid foods it was quickly obvious he had many food allergies. One of his first foods (after cereal) was avocados and he had an immediate allergic reaction (vommit, hives, facial & neck swelling). Although there is the "top 8" (the most common food allergies in the US) you can be allergic to almost any food and many foods are in the same "family". Anyway, keep allergies in mind. If that seems to be the issue www.foodallergy.org is a great place to get info.

how old? My daughter always got this about 3 weeks before a tooth was going to come in.

I just looked at your other questions and am deducing that your son is almost 6 months? I bet he's teething and will be getting a tooth in the near future.

my daughter also has this. comes and goes. she is 1 now and i dont notice it as much but she seemed to have it happen more when she was teething. as long as its not bothering him or he is not running a fever i would not worry to much.

I just went through something similar with my 7 yr old. I am not sure if this pertains to you.. but I thought I would tell you..
My sons cheeks were super red for a couple or days, maybe three. Then he got a rash on legs & arms. Took him to the doctor and they said it was a virus called "Slap Cheek or Fifth Disease". I am not sure if this is for school age children or not. It wasn't a huge deal for us. No medicine, the rash eventually went away. It is contagious before the rash but the problem, you never know when the rash is coming. Maybe something to ask about.. Not to make you worry! Good luck. My daughter had the same thing. She is 8 1/2 months and probably hasn't had it for about the last month. I never could pinpoint to anything specific. I think it was just teething or sensitive skin. It did look cute though since her cheeks were so chunky and round. :)

That is definitely baby eczema. I'm surprised your pedi didn't say anything about it. Hydrocortisone 1% ointment and a moisturizing creme, mixed together, will do the trick. Both my babies had that.

My kids had rosey cheeks when teething, probably from inflammation. So it may be that. Also, my daughter's cheeks would get rosey and then look dry for a couple days and we figured out that my mom's moisturizer/sunblock was irritating her skin. It only happened when my mom had been loving on her! So now she doesn't wear it when she comes over, and it hasn't happened since :)

All of my kids were like this, so was I...always with the red 'rosey' cheeks! I was worried too but it was fine, they are fine...no biggie!

It may just be some type of eczema, my youngest has very bad case of it... only a steroid cream works... it runs in the family, but he has it the worse... Just asked your doctor the next time you are in...

My son was born and had red cheeks - though they seemed very dry so I put aquaphor on it. It got much better. My suggestion is to make sure his face is wiped clean and dry after feedings and make sure you moisturize (if seemed dry).

Otherwise, could it be rosesia?
