Baby's Stomach Not Full Enough on 20 Week Ultrasound Anatomy Scan

Hi all. I just had my 20 week anatomy scan yesterday, and everything looks great, but the tech and doctor said they don't like that the baby's stomach isn't full enough. They said it could possibly be timing issue, that he hasn't swallowed the amniotic fluid in a while, or he emptied his bladder at that time. But of course they also said it could mean the baby is not swallowing properly. I have to wait to go back in two weeks but I am so worried. Everyone is saying not to, but I'm sure you all understand how hard that is. Has anyone had anything similar happen, or can someone shed some light? Thank you.

What can I do next?

Sometimes it would really be helpful if the doctors would tell you once they are for sure so that you don't worry about what if's when they really don't know. One thing you know without a shadow of a doubt is that you have a beautiful baby growing inside of you. Right now that child is nestled right under the very heart that loves them more than the world and would do anything to make life the very best for them. Your child is in the best place possible at this moment, with you all snuggly and warm. Enjoy this babies every wiggle. Cherish his hiccups and foot jabs. You can't do anything about tomorrow until tomorrow comes but you can make all the difference today. Love this little one and I will pray all is well tomorrow.

Yes. I was told the exact same thing with my first baby at about 26 weeks. Follow up ultrasounds showed nothing unusual. He is 5 now and has no medical issues. Ultrasounds can be so scary! A huge percentage of things that raise "red flags" on ultrasound turn out to be part of typical development. I know exactly how you feel. My second had CPC (little cysts in his brain) that, along with many other things, can indicate major chromosomal syndromes. I was freaked out for 2 weeks until the detailed ultrasound that showed the cysts disappeared and no other issues. If everything else looks good, focus on that. I know how hard it is but try not to stress out. It is very likely that you will look back at this as a stressful blip in your pregnancy and nothing more.

I understand why you are worrying BUT worrying will not help. Worrying will not help him swallow better and you can't do anything about it at this point.
Have you searched to see what problems may arise later after the birth if the baby isn't swallowing enough? Information is your friend. Be informed and prepared and not just worrying.

It seems like they are always finding something on that 20 week ultrasound these days. With my last baby they told me some scary news at my 20 week ultrasound...that my baby was missing an artery in her umbilical cord. I mistakenly googled that condition. Bad idea. Then I got smart like you and posted a question on here to other moms about the condition. I got about 20 responses from people who had been through the same diagnosis and had perfect babies, as it turns out I would too.

As long as your doctor didn't give you any special instructions, just get your rest, drink plenty of water, take your prenatals, and eat healthy. Also try not to worry, believe me I know it's easier said than done. But stress isn't ever a good thing, so pamper yourself. Get a massage from a licensed prenatal masseuse, get a latte and a pedi, order in your favorite dinner. Hugs to you and your baby.

My dr told me something scary on the ultrasound of my last child. I was worried for a day or two then tried to just forget it until I could get back to the dr. for a follow-up ultrasound. Everything turned out fine and my "baby" turns 7 today.

K., so many women are told of so many problems on ultrasounds including my DIL and in the end all babies were perfect. I can say do not worry, but you will. I feel that in today's world, there are so many wonderful advances but with that comes a lot of false types of reading. Being pregnant 36 years ago was wonderful. If there was a problem at birth you dealt with it but were able to enjoy pregnancy I would definitely go back or you will be a wreck. Chances are your little one is fine. Try to relax.
