Baby's First Word

Hi Mommies
I was wondering when babies should say their first word of Mama or Dada?? I recall that my daughter did that around 7-8 months old but my son who is almost 8 months old now hasn't said any clear sound yet except of giggling and laughing? Should I be worried?? Thanks for the help.

What can I do next?

I wouldn't be worried at all. I agree with the other moms, boys are definitely slower than girls when it comes to talking. My son just happily babbled and grunted and pointed at what he wanted until he was almost one and even then we only got a few words out of him (ma, dada, ba (for bottle) and kuck (for truck). My daughter at age one was putting words together and saying everything so it was really strange for us.

I have friends who also have little boys and they say the same thing, they just don't talk as early or as much. We were laughing the other day because my niece, who is 23 months old, wanted a drink so she said "I'm thirsty may I have a drink of juice please" whereas my son who is only a little younger (he's 20 months) just pointed and said "cup". I think boys just express themselves differently - it is definitely not anything to worry, especially at his age.

It's way too early to be concerned. First of all, boys typically develop speech later than girls, second of all - it's still early. Try not to compare your two children too much - I know it's hard, but especially since they are different genders they are going to develop differently. I have a son and daughter and they couldn't be more different (except that they both have the same gorgeous eyes!) from their speech development to physical development (she was actually earlier on both and she's the second born). Just relax and enjoy him. Before you know it he won't stop talking!

Males talk less then females, even at this age some boys just don't talk as much as girls their same age. You can try denying him things he wants to encourage him to stay something. Of course don't frustrate him, but challenge him. My daughter's first word was "cookie". You can start with simple words, if you have a pet, or while playing ball with him, even his cup. You can even try sign language, babies have fine motor skill before he have verbal skill and ability. I had success with signs before my girl could verbalize what she wanted.

Good luck and try not to stress, he could just be taking his sweet time.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. All babies do things differently. Some talk earlier than others. If he's giggling and laughing, I'm sure he'll soon be trying to imitate sounds and talk.
