I love Blue Lizard sunscreen for babies and adults! It stays on really well and works great! You have to order it online and I found it at coolibar.com.

Looks like you've gotten some awesome responses here! Most the brands listed I would agree should be safe, and I'll add one as well. I use Aubry Organics Natural Sun. It's not USDA Organic, but I trust Aubry as most of their line is certified USDA organic.

Also, getting sun is good for the little ones! I don't use sunscreen on my kids unless we are at the beach, swimming or in another situation where they are at high risk for burning. They have deep tans most the year and rarely catch the cold "bugs" that circulate. I would contribute that to having sufficient Vitamin D to ward off the illnesses.

I would caution on using any main stream, can-find-them-anywhere brands as well as Avon and Arbonne, check them out and read the labels really well. My reason for that is that I have had many people tell me that their consultants said that they are organic...however it's not organic as we generally think of organic, as in All-Natural or no harmful chemicals. Remember, crude oil is an organic substance and that is how some companies get away with claiming "organic"...they are using the chemical definition.

We use Mexitan www.mexitan.com. it has no chemicals, 100% all natural, eco-friendly and Biodegradeable. i also use their bug repellent since the bugs love to bite us. you also get a lot of suncreen for your money. it will last us the summer at least. we pretty much use it at the pool and when outside for long periods of time. Califorina Baby is also good but really expensive for the amount you get.

I would only use brands tested by Environmental Working Group, a non profit that tests to ensure that what you are buying is truly safe for your child. Go to WWW.COSMETICSDATABASE.COM they have a list of sunscreens that have been approved. I usually select one of the top three, that they recommend.

Have you seen the Arbonne baby products? They are all natural...check them out on their website...www.arbonne.com, and if you decide to order some, let me know, and i'll get them for you.

I'm a dermatologist and normally recommend products containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients. They are usually less irritating than some of the other chemicals.

Your friends are right!! There are horrible chemicals in them. We use a sunscreen that is made from Carrots. I order it from www.herbalhealer.com other good products that are cheaper you can get from www.vitacost.com Jasons or Alba are good brands too.

Everyone in my family is very fair and so I load up on the sunscreen. I think the usual precaution is no sunscreen for babies under 6 months. I also have been getting the UV swimsuits- most have surfing look tops- and they have been wonderful; my kids haven't got pink when wearing those to the beach and elsewhere at all.

Anything that is for children will be just fine like water babies, No AD, etc. Anything with a SPF of 50 will do. I don't know anything about dangerous chemicals in sunscreens and I don't know if I would trust something labeled as all natural or or organic to really be protective against the suns rays.

My husband and three year old are allergic to chemical sunscreens (the most common), and react with hives and rashes wherever there's contact. We really like California Babies sunscreen, which is chemical free (mostly zinc oxide) and unfortunately, wildly expensive. If you can swallow the price, it's available at Target (baby section) and Whole Foods/Harry's.

The Aveeno sunscreen is one I would highly recommend, they have one specifically for babies with SPF 55. Both my girls, ages 3 & 5 have sensitive skin, and my 5 yr old had allergic reactions (skin rashes)after I tried many other brands. The Aveeno brand is hypoallergenic and pediatrician recommended. It is the only one I can use on my girls without causing them to breakout. It can be pricey at $10+ per bottle, but worth it to protect precious skin.

Avon carries a line of sunscreens that have bug repellent in them. It's got the Skin So Soft in it. I don't know if you grew up using SSS as a bug repellent but we did and it was a great gentle way to keep the bugs off. This stuff has no DEET and it's very gentle. Also, it's pretty inexpensive. I was a little concenred it was too good to be true, but we got through last season without burn or bites.
It's Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus Gentle Breeze. Wow that's a mouth full!

Your friends and family are right about chemicals in sunscreen. Not only are there chemicals in sunscreen, but chemicals are in cleaners, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, laundry brightener, spot remover, cosmetics, body wash, shampoo, etc. I use a sun block that children(6 mo. and older) and adults can use. It contains microfine zinc oxide, natural vitamins and botanicals in a oil-free formula. It is one of the best blockers against UV rays.

Just look for sunscreens that don't have parabens or sodium lauryl (laureth) sulfates in the ingredients. You can find them at online vitamin stores, herb shops and maybe even the organic section at the grocery store. HTH

I only use sunscreen for pool or beach trips or if we'll be outside in direct sunlight for more than an hour. I think we're slowly poisoning ourselves with chemicals and people need some amount of sun exposure--it's good for you. When I do use sunscreen, I use a natural brand--burts bees, california baby, earth's best, etc. I think you are doing the right thing by keeping her out of peak sun times and using a hat--Personally, I think that's all you need to do for everyday protection.

Arbonne is REALLY good - I've used it since twins were babies (now 6.) We've never had a sunburn, never had a reaction. The products have no rendering products or parabens. The downside - you have to order through company/consultant. The shelf-life of Arbonne products is 18 months or less b/c no bad ingredients. The company doesn't mass distributors b/c of short shelf-life. I don't sell it but can put you in touch with my person if you are interested. She can send free samples of baby products.
