Does anyone know of any good baby signing classes in the downtown Chicago area? I'm already familiar with Bubbles Academy and Gymboree, so please also let me know if you or anyone else you know has had a good experience with either place. My baby girl is 6 months old ;-)

THanks!

we bought a book and did a few basics with our daughter (she's 14 months) - she picked them up quickly.

if you are interested in a class downtown, Merit School of Music in the west loop has them. merit is a great organization, and they have baby signs, music, and rhythm classes. they are at monroe and peoria.

You can purchase your own baby signing kit at Be Bye Baby.

I wouldn't bother with an actual class--unless you really want to. I used baby signs with my daughter (which was great!) by taking out a book at the library. I've also heard that there is a newer book on the market that comes with an instructional DVD for parents/caregivers.

Good luck! It's so much fun when they start to catch on.

Hi R.,

I agree with the other posts - no class needed. It's really simple to do yourself. I think I bought a video at Babies R Us and went from there. You start with basics like "eat" "milk" and "more" and then add words. You can use the official sign language signs (I did for most) or make up signs that are logical and easy for your baby and you to understand. It's pretty cool to be across the room and know what your baby needs by their signs - my daughter is 2 1/2 and still uses her signs as an emphasis (her favorite is PLEASE!!!) when I'm not reacting fast enough :-) Good luck and have fun with it...it's a great way for your baby tell you what she wants or needs before she can speak the words.

I don't' think you need a class. If you get some books or even just look for simple signs online you should be set. Just pair the sign with the word in natural settings and you baby will begin to pick up on it. It won't happen right away and can take awhile. However, one day they just do it!! Good luck.
