Does anyone use their older son or daughter to help teach signs to the baby in the family? Would you recommend having siblings help with signing?

What can I do next?

We have four children and each has helped the next. It is a benefit to both and to the parents. I highly recommend it!

It is a wonderful idea to have the older sibling help out. It is great way to involve the 2 kids together and think how proud the older on will be to be able to teach something to someone else! If you older child doesn't want to I wouldn't push it though. My almost 4 year old boy loves teaching his almost 2 year year old sister-including sign language :)

I did some baby signs with my oldest & it was very nice for him to be able to 'tell' me what he needed instead of just crying.
I think it would be nice for the sibling(s) to help. It would make them feel more helpful. I would think you would want a much older child to help, maybe ages 7 +?

God bless!

Our oldest jumped right back on board with the signing to our second child. He loved the idea of helping, and seeing her communicate. He was also insistent that she sign please and thank you :) which is nice to have everyone on the same page. She was also willing to do for him, what she didn't feel like for us LOL. We didn't go crazy, but used probably a dozen or so signs. I liked it. Good luck.

PS he is just 17 mos older, but loves to play the teacher!

Yes, I say it would help, no matter the age of the sibling. If the baby sees you and your other child signing, he/she would pick up more on those signs & see it as a way to communicate.

I only have one child, but I have a younger nephew. My daughter is 4 years old and my nephew is 18 months. We sign with both, and my nephew learned early on how to sign. It helps kids to see other kids doing things.

I also recommend the Signing Time video series. That's how my daughter learned, and she still loves to watch it! They get to see other kids doing the signs, so it makes it fun!
