I am hosting my SIL's baby shower and need some ideas for favors. I do not want to say the sky's the limit on cost but I am willing to spend "extra". She is the greatest SIL (and Aunt!) on the planet and we are thrilled to be welcoming her baby boy!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the advice! What I ended up doing was creating 8 centerpieces out of a variety of baby toys, ie. fisher price dump trucks, shape sorters, etc. I fitted them with styrofoam and covered the foam with paper grass (like what you put in gift baskets). I ordered chocolate lollipops in assorted "baby" patterns in white, blue and milk chocolate (on long sticks) which were wrapped in cello and tied with blue and white ribbons that said "It's a boy!" Those were my favors along with little blue boxes filled with baby themed conversation hearts. The tables looked adorable and my SIL got to take home all the toys.

I was thinking to myself how cool it would have been if she was having a girl. I envisioned pretty flower pots as centerpieces will with colorful choco lolly's in the shapes of Gerbera daisy's with little seed packs tied to them. Hopefully my other SIL with find herself in the momma way soon and with a girl!!!

For my girlfriend, I made cinnamon sugar and put it into shakers with tags that read "Sugar and spice and everything nice..." but she was having a girl.

One super-cute thing I saw for a baby boy shower was a variety of cookie cutters - trains, cars, baseball bats, footballs - with ribbons attached. Another cute thing was a seed packet for herbs that you can plant in a pot in your kitchen. And M&Ms does personalized candies with messages on them. There are so many options!

R.,
How about making chicks out of washcloths and possibly a centerpiece at her table with teething rings, pacifiers, combs & brushes, receiving blanket, washcloths, etc. If you want the instructions for them I can scan them and send them to you.

Another idea that I have done was I went to Michael's or A.C. Moore and picked up the Chinese food cartons (baby colors) and filled them with homemade candy. I picked up candy molds of babies, chicks, teddy bears, babies, etc. and used different colored chocolates. I bought the chocolate from a cake decorating store that sells better quality chocolate than you can get at the craft stores. Then used the washcloths and centerpieces for the mom to be. One other thing, on every table I placed one centerpiece and had a drawing for each table so that one person at that table got that.
Hope this helps.
T.

I gave away very cute cookies (trains, rattles, stork, baby blocks) from crowley cookies.
http://www.crowleycookies.com

She has an unlimited supply of cookies cutters so if you have a specific idea of what you want she can work with you. She is very hands on and pays alot of attention to the details on the cookies. They were amazing looking and a big hit!
I believe she started making the cookies for her kids when they were in school and it evolved into a business.
She ships the cookies fed-ex so they arrive fresh. All the cookies arived in one piece. Plus I think she sends a few extras just in case one breaks.
My girlfriend also used her and had a very good experience as well.
Good luck!

I just read through all the answers and had this thought....how many times have you gone to a shower and come home with some little momento...but really didn't use it or display it because....well just because. In lieu of party favors I would like you to share a little something about yourself with the baby. Purchase a 'classic' beautifully bound storybook that you pass around the shower and let the attendees write a message inside the covers or on one of their favorite stories, about 'who they are and why they are there to share in this wonderful occasion. And have each add a special memory from their childhood that made them so happy. I think most people would love to do this and what a nice momento for the mother to be and the baby.

For my SIL's shower, we handed out cookie cutters and candy. Attached was a little "recipe" for motherhood. It had stuff like 2 cups love, 1 TB patience, sprinkle with kisses, etc.

You could add cookies or other baking items to make it as simple or fancy as you'd like.

One time I gave little magnetic picture frames (plastic ones for the fridge) with a paper inside that said "reserved for baby Smith". And along with that I gave each person a packet of "baby's breath" seeds (also known as Gypsophilia) so they could plant them in their yard. Just something a little different.
