My 4 1/2 month old has recently begun deeply rubbing his eyes when he feeds. Has anyone else experienced this, is it allergies?

What can I do next?

I agree. I think it's a soothing, relaxing technique following increased hand coordination. Probably isn't an allergy, unless you're wearing a perfume and/or lotion that could be irritating his eyes during nursing. But if that were the case he would probably have a runny, itchy nose also. My 4 month old daughter recently started the face, eye and forehead rubbing during nursing to. Sometimes it's kind of cute....Just have to keep their fingernails short!

He's tired.
My kids did that too.

Also, at 4.5 months old, this shows that that his motor-skills and hand coordination for a conscious movement... has developed well.
Unlike a younger baby that cannot do that yet... or cannot even "aim" their hands to their face, on purpose, at will.

All the best,
Susan

I think it's really just a way to begin soothing/relaxing. My son does the same (actually both did - I have 2 boys), and it takes him a while before he really relaxes into the nursing. Then he nurses with his hand over his face. He does the same when trying to suck/sucking his thumb.
