I gave my son some ORGANIC cereal the other day and it did the same thing! He had a puffy red rash just where the cereal had touched his chin. I put a cool wash cloth on it and it cleared up pretty fast. A friend of mine has a daughter who gets food related rashes often and she just said that something in the cereal made him sensitive, so hold off on the cereal for a week and reintroduce it...which is good because it was super expensive : ) If he gets rashy again, reintroduce it later, give his body a chance to recognize the food ingredient. She said it was no biggie. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is very likely that it will happen again. Sounds like he has an allergic sensitivity to something in the sauce and reacted in a pattern like contact dermatitis. To learn more about children's allergies you might want to read: "Say Good-bye to Children's Allergies" by Dr. Devi Nambudripad.

Looks like your baby is allergice to sweet and sour sauce. Do not give it to him again! I firmly believe in N.A.E.T. to clear out allergies. Go to www.naet.com and find a certified chiropractor in your area. Good luck!

I agree with most posters that it was the acidity and/or msg, etc. I also agree with the posters that warned against introducing too much processed foods/sauces to your babies diet. I find just seasoning with onion, garlic, pepper or any herbs/spices adds great flavor. I want my daughter (15mo) to enjoy different flavors, too! As for food, and good info on feeding your LO healthy, I love the book and website by Cynthia Lair - Feeding the Whole Family, www.cookusinterruptus.com. Great resources and recipes! Healthy and flavorful!

Sweet and sour sauce has a lot of ingredients that might be a bit much for a ittle one. Mainly, it is made with vinegar and sugar, is very acidic, and likely contains MSG and food coloring.
Personally, I would hold off on the sauces. Babies don't know yet about sugars and dipping things in sauces, or even about salt. As adults, we're used to looking for those extra flavors because we've had them. I'd say try to go without them. The baby won't know the difference.

perhaps, there was some kind of citrus in the sweet & sour sauce..... (citrus can cause some mouth rash to occur, as well as mangoes, and pineapple). Or some other ingredient in it, that caused the reaction.
Asian sweet & sour sauces often contain some kind of citrus or pineapple. But this is for freshly made kind. If eating these fruits fresh... make sure to rinse/wash around the mouth after eating. Here where I live, my kids love mangoes and pineapple... and we always wash and rinse around our mouths after. There are certain enzymes in these fruits, that can cause a rash/itching.

You could keep the container the sauce came in and look at the ingredients. And perhaps call your Pediatrician... to see what they think.

Your son probably got a "topical" reaction to the sauce... from getting some around his mouth as he ate.?

It can happen again... or not.
Luckily, it was not a severe reaction to it.

All the best,
Susan

Hey N.,
It sounds like he is allergic, or has a sensitivity, to something in the sauce. I would get an ingredient list of the sauce for future reference. If he should have a reaction to any other product, try to find the common ingredients and avoid those substances.
Also, do not give him any more of the sweet and sour sauce as you don't know how his body will react the next time around.

Hey N.. When I read your post I said "That happened to us". It's a strange thing. My now 5 yr old and now 11 yr old had the same thing. It was always the sweet and sour that did it. But it always went away and stopped happening completely (although I don't remember when). Something in the sauce makes sensitive skin break out in a rash. But I think they grow out of it. My kids did. :)

Food allergies tend to worsen with exposure. If you are not sure WHICH ingredient was the culprit, avoid all of them. Keep children's benidryl on hand incase of an allergy that effects breathing.

Your baby is sensitive to the acids in the sauce, it's not an allergic reaction just a sensitivity to the acid from the tomatoes and vinegar. My youngest daughter still has this happen when she eats anything that has a tomato based sauce especially if it has vinegar in it also.

Chances are it will happen every time but it's not dangerous and if you wash his face immediately after the rash won't be as noticeable. Baby's skins are much more sensitive.

I would be careful. There are so many dyes and preservatives in things you just never know how a little one will respond. So many people are allergic to them too, my friend is allergic to red dyes, her tongue gets swollen and her throat gets scratchy. I would abstain from processed food like that for your baby, he certainly doesn't need it. The nugget alone should have been fine. But I would be more careful from now on what you give him. Not only for the sake of allergies but you are helping him form his tastes and by giving him such flavorful, salty, fatty, sugary, processed foods you are asking for trouble and teaching him that is how food is supposed to taste. I say it's a good thing this happened, he is young enough that eliminating unhealthy choices now will be a piece of cake--no pun intended! ;)

My son would get the same thing with tomato sauce...I think it's pretty common. He's 7 now and doesn't get it anymore. Your son may outgrow it but just keep an eye on it - it may never happen again or it may get worse - you never know with these things. See what the doctor thinks.

Good luck.

Hello, No big deal now. It was probably just too much acid in the sauce. Try something else next time and wait until he is a little older to try the sweet and sour. There may also be an ingredient he can't tolerate in it.
Good luck with your precious little boy.

I would make sure to avoid anything with MSG in it. Not good for anyone and especially for a little one.

It is scary when a child has a reaction we don't understand, especially to something we gave them. I had the same scenario as you described...My daughter had a reaction to sweet and sour sauce when she was about the same age. It left an pinkish skin irritation and little tiny bumps around her mouth immediately upon eating the sauce. I noticed and took away the sauce(knowing it was a "new food" given and must be the cause) and cleaned her up. It did go away soon- on its own. I just assumed her delicate receptors/skin were not ready for the ingredients in the sauce (since the reaction was mild- not what I would assume to be "an allergy to that food"), so I did not give it to her for many years. Later, as a young child (since about 5 years old) she now LOVES sweet and sour and just has to have it with her chicken! Hope the same will be true for your child.

This same thing happens to my daughter when I give her anything with berries in it. Just a rash where ti touched her skin. I've never had any other problems arise afterward :)
