Baby Only Nurses from One Side

My baby is 6 days old and has no problem latching on on the left side. I went to a breast feeding support group when he was 3 days old and the lactation consultant suggested that I try a SS (stimulation something - it's a tiny tube that runs from a container of formula that you place next to the nipple to encourage eating). I can't get the hang of that. It was also noted that the rejected breast has a slightly different nipple, which is why he refuses to nurse on that side. I'm pumping as often as I can (am still getting used to this mother routine) on the one side and nursing exclusively from the other. Has anyone experienced a problem like this and if so, what did you do? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had the same problem... I had a wonderful post partum doula/lactation supporters who just kept helping to place him, propping my arms/his head and body with pillows, and we just kept offering as long as it took. I think it took about 4 weeks and then we didn't have any more problems or preference after that! Sandy Caldwell and both at Mama2Mama were WONDERFUL. Hang in there! And definately get in someone who can support you in th home.

Hello! my son was the same exact way!!! my nipple, roo, was a different shape so he couldn't latch on. Don't give up! At What I did is after you have fed him from the "good" breast to at least take the hunger edge off, keep trying the other side. I found that a different hold did the trick for me. So, if you are dong cradle hold, try cross-cradle or football. As long as your supply from one breast is filling your son, keep on tryng. Good luck!

how was the birth? Sometimes when it is particularly long & difficult, as my son's was, there can be some molding(sp) to the head, which affects how their little jaw & neck work & turn. My son had a hard time turning his head in one direction, so we had to do the football hold for tge left breast. A couple women i know had to have some gentle cranial work done on their babies' skulls in order for babies to really get a hang of the breastfeeding. Perhaps this is offbase, but it might be something to look into. Good luck!! Breastfeeding is hard at first, but once you both get the hang of it, it is sooo mch easier than formula!!! Keep going, you're doing the right thing!

Hello!
Both my girls favored my right side in the beginning. Just keep at it and I would keep going to the breastfeeding support group. It took my first daughter 3 whole weeks to get the hang of breastfeeding and my second daughter 2.5 weeks. I went to a lactation consultant with my second daughter. If it makes you feel better, go to the consultant in a week from now. It may be expensive, but think how much you will spend on formula if you quit breastfeeding. I supplemented with formula and pump breast milk with each daughter after some feedings if I felt they were still hungry. My first daughter was losing too much weight and I had to do so. With my second daughter, I didn't want that to happen again so I just did the supplementation. No nipple confusion in both cases. Keep at it, your daughter will be a pro at breastfeeding on both sides with just a little more practice! Also, fyi, my breasts are a very different shape now....the right one, the favored side, is way bigger than the other one now....

My daughter likes differend holds for each breast. For one side, I use the cross-cradle hold (where she is across my body - head by one breast, feet by the other one). For the other side, I just slide her around (without turning her over) and use the football hold (with her feet under my arm pointing toward the rocking chair).

I think, in part, she doesn't like to be disturbed by being flipped over to change sides.

My son did the same thing, so I kept trying with the one he didn't want and only gave him that one at first. He'd be hungry so he'd go for it. I also tried different holds on that side. I eventually used a nursing pillow to elevate him (he was premature so when really little I didn't need it). I think having the extra elevation to the breast made him and my more comfortable.
