Baby Not Interested in Self Feeding - Normal?

My boy is nine months old - he shows no interest in self feeding. If I put finger foods in his mouth, he'll eat them, but if I put cheerios or chunks of banana on his tray, he just mushes them with his fingers and makes a mess. I also gave him a teether popsicle thingy last night that is supposed to "promote self feeding" it has a little handle and I put frozen apple puree in the mesh part. I tried to get him to hold it, but no luck. When I feed him (or even give him a sippy cup) he just holds his arms out to the sides, and is more than content to let me do it! Is this normal? He went through a phase where he was putting everything in his mouth, but seems to be not doing that much any more, he's all about banging things together or "thumbing" everything to death (he pokes at everything with him thumb pointed downward)

What can I do next?

Normal. At some point he is going to get his hand to his mouth and realize he can eat it..

Just keep doing what you are doing. He has only be sitting up on his own for a few months and only eating solids for a short time.. he sounds like he is doing great.

Do you eat as a family? A lot of baby behaviors are learned by watching. If you're only eating away from him, it's time to change that habit. Sit at the table. Put his high chair by you and eat a bit while you're feeding him. Give him a jar of something, take a break and put some finger foods in front of him, and eat your own meal. Make sure he can see you putting the food into your mouth. He'll get it.

This is common. Keep it up by putting things in front of him. The light needs to go on to associate picking it up and putting it into his mouth. Did you just start this process? Give it another week or two and then call pediatrician if you absolutely have no luck. It took my son a few weeks and then he wouldn't stop. :)

My daughter was the same way. She will be 11 months old in a few days and she just started self feeding in the past few weeks. She just did it out of nowhere but before she was doing the same as your son.

As far as not holding his cup, my oldest wouldn't do it himself. I swear he was 15 months old before he ever held a sippy cup or bottle. He was spoiled though being my firs child, I did everything for him. Why would he want to hold his cup when he knew I would do it for him? So, I stopped and he had no choice. I learned from him, with my daughter I had her holding her own bottle at 7 months.

I wouldn't worry about it since you know he CAN put things into his mouth on his own. He's just choosing not to. He likes you to do it for him, which is fine. Loves his mommy, that's what he's comfortable with. It will happen with time.

My son didn't self feed (full on, occasionally would put a piece or two in, but that was it) until 12 months. He'll eat when he is ready, just like he'll crawl, walk, talk when he is ready. :D
