Baby Laundry Soap

Hi ladies! I have a question- I'm 34 weeks pregnant with my 3rd, and I'm trying to get everything together. I have a bunch of clothes of my first daughter's that I'm trying to get clean and folded and ready to go. With my first two, I used the special baby laundry detergents, but they are so expensive. I normally use an all-natural, plant-based dye-free laundry soap, so this should be okay to use on the baby's clothes, right? Neither one of my first two really seemed to have any kind of allergies, although my son did and does have sensitive skin on occasion, but it doesn't seem in any way related to his clothing (it usually affects his face). I would really like to avoid buying the expensive bottles of Dreft, if possible. Any advice???

What can I do next?

I have 3 children and never used Dreft with any of then. I washed (and still do) all their clothing in Gain and have never had any problems. I agree that Dreft is a waste of money and time.

Hi S.-

I bought Dreft religiously with my first child for the first year. With my second I used it for 2 months. With my third I did not use it at all. My youngest is now 17 months and has had no problems whatsoever from his clothes being washed right along with the rest of the family laundry. Go ahead and use what you always do.

Good Luck,
K.

After the first bottle of baby laundry soap, I started using my regular soap and continued to do so with all of my kids. No problems. I wouldn't use the specialty soap unless you know there is a problem. Just don't put too much soap in and it will all rinse out just fine.

I never even bought the expensive baby soap. I just washed her stuff with ours from day one and she was fine. I guess it depends on the baby, but I would try it first and then if your baby is allergic you can switch. :)

I started to use Dreft with my son and found it wasn't worth the expense. My daughter on the other hand is a red head with very, very sensitive skin. I use the Dreft, but just use very little. And then I run a rinse cycle with vinegar and then another plain rinse cycle with nothing.

You might be able to get away with using a dye free type product and rinsing with cheap white vinegar.

Congrats on your new baby!

As long as the detergent does not contain any harsh chemiclas and washes completely out of your baby's clothing (which in an HE washer will happen anyways as long as you use the appropriate amount) then you shouldn't have to worry about it. If there is a skin sensitivity issue with this child find out if you detergent comes in a dye free/scent free version and you should still be good to go...

Good luck and congratulations on the newest addition to your family... ;-)

baby all is a bit cheaper. i would have one bottle handy just incase he does have a reaction. i was putting oxy clean in his wash and realized if i am putting that then i bet he would be fine with regular detergent and he was. i think its just a test it out thing. good luck and congrats.

I agree dreft is a waste of money have never bought it for my two, I wash all our cloths together w/ tide or cheer. If yours have sensitive skin any free and clear soap should do and almost every brand has one.

I wasn't going to pay as much as Dreft cost either, so I settled for the store brand. I shop at Target ALOT, so that was the store brand I used. It worked just as well as the Dreft. Personally, I would do that before I used what you are using for laundry now.

My son does have eczema and even now that he is 2 I can't use the regular detergents, have to buy one free of all scents and dyes. I use the All Free and Clear.

Good luck and congrats!

I have never bought the Dreft stuff....even with my littlest who has ecsyma it was not needed. I personally think as long as the soap is rinsed from the clothes well enough, it is fine. Her allergy is to MSG by the way and the soaps dont bother her a bit. HTH

S.,

I never deviated from my detergent and my children never suffered any skin problems. I use Tide w/ Bleach powder (ranked highest for cleanability, freshness, etc. in Consumer Reports). My thought is, you'll be holding them and probably breastfeeding them while wearing clothes washed in your regular detergent so it should be safe for them to wear as well. I'm on babies 3&4 (twins) and never had any issues. Try your regular detergent first, if you have problems you can always switch.

Any brand detergent that is free and clear (free of dyes and perfumes) would be fine to use on your childs clothes. There is no need to buy dreft.

For extra softness you can add baking soda to the wash, it helps freshen and softens the water.

My son and I both have extremely sensitive skin, this is what I use in the laundry and always have.

I use Shaklee laundry detergent free and always have. Great for babies,kids and adults. The free only comes in 5lbs boxes (powder), and it's about $18 a box, but lasts for at least 6 weeks and usually for 8. They do have a free liquid, and if you're interested, I can find out how much it is - just respond to me. I only wash once a week, about 8 loads a week (between towels and sheets and clothing) they're all full loads, of course. It's great and there's no reason to keep the baby's clothes separate.

I use to use Deft and then I switched my entire family to SA8 because it was biodegradeable and on the EPA list of approved products. My twin girls (who were sensitive to everything until almost 3) skin improved and we havent any problems since.

SA8;
* Fresh scent.
* Cleans great in soft and hard water.
* Contains biodegradable surfactants (cleaning agents) that remove grease and oily soils, then break down into carbon dioxide and water.
* Contains biological enzymes to remove tough stains like blood, grass, chocolate, and eggs.
* Contains clean-rinsing natural water softeners from corn molasses and sugar beets.
* Super-concentrated formula results in more uses per package, so less packaging goes into landfills.
* Inhibits the corrosion of metal found in zippers, buttons, and washing machines.
* Dermatologically and allergy tested.
* Contains no phosphates.
* Safe and effective for use in high-efficiency washers.
* Certified kosher too!

Comes in powder or liquid form & if that is not sensitive enough for you they do sell the Sensitive SA8 (Triple tested by pediatricians, dermatologists, and allergists) which is still cost effective.

Not only that but if you use it and dont like it you get free return shipping & refund.

I really like the All Free and Clear. I have a 1 yo and a 2 yo--neither have had any trouble. Honestly, after the first few months and not having any reaction, I feel comfortable buying whatever is cheap, on sale or with the best coupon. When I ran some errands for my sister in law and found that she bought Sun detergent (very inexpensive) it really opened my eyes. We get lots of hand me downs from her and the clothes are always in great condition. We make messes together so I know what those clothes have been through! Good luck!

I was anti-Dreft while PG. I planned to wash my son's clothes with mine in a free & clear detergent. But someone gave me some Dreft, so I used it and I was hooked! I LOVE the smell. I even wash my nursing tanks in it. For me, it makes doing my son's laundry more enjoyable. And having the Dreft smell on my pumping bra helps me with my letdown at work.

I wouldn't worry about using what you're using. If it's dye free and natural it should be fine. I used regular old Tide with my daughters clothes. She was never bothered by it. I agree why spend the extra money.

What you are using now is probably better than Dreft, since it had not additives to irritate.

kroger has a baby detergent that is very reasonably priced. It is put out by Everyday Living and I think it is about $4 for the bottle. I found it next to the dreft. good luck. I use for my grandsons clothes and i lik it.
