Hi moms, I have quite a few baby items (clothes, blankets, car seats, swings) that I'm no longer using. Everything is in good condition. I would like to donate them to an organization that gives the items to those in need (not sells them, like Goodwill). I'd prefer a non-religious organization, such as a women's shelter or homeless shelter. I live in the North Shore, but would be willing to drop the things off somewhere. Thanks.
There is also a place in Palatine, on Plum Grove road called PHD, Preservation for Human Dignity, who helps teens and other women in need for their pregnancy and new baby needs.

Since it’s so easy for you to toss your children’s stuff (as opposed to, say, your New Kids on the Block tapes), here are charitable ways to ensure gently used items stay in rotation once you put them out the door.
Jane Addams Hull House Association needs books, toys, toiletries, and diapers to support its child care, foster care, and literacy training services. Drop off at 1030 West Van Buren Avenue, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m.
Christopher House accepts baby formula, toys, clothes, and books for its teen parent and infant development program. Drop off at 2507 North Greenview Avenue, in Lincoln Park, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m.-7 p.m.
Hephzibah Children’s Association gives new books, toys, and clothing to kids ages 4-12 residing in its group home. Drop off at 946 North Boulevard, in Oak Park, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

I know you said you preferred non-religious but just in case you are open to a community group that does have a church affiliation: I send some of my things to Lawndale Christian Church and community center. Why? Because they have a fabulous neighborhood outreach program and I know they will make good use of what I send. They also have SO much need in that area with lots of very young new moms who really have nothing ie no baby toys, no warm clothes in winter. They are on Ogden opposite Lawndale Christian Health Center (which is affiliated).
Additionally, one of my neighbors has adopted 9 children, the youngest are all HIV +. The very youngest's mom is pregnant again and when the baby girl is born, she will be adopted by the oldest in the family and his partner. They don't have a lot of money but have a lot of heart. So if you want to give anything to them, I would be happy to take it to them. I live in Oak Park.
If you call the Evanston Women's Club they can give you the name of a Women's Shelter to donate items to. You may even be able to drop the items there. Also, there is a place called Christopher House in Lincoln Park that takes care of children in the child welfare system. They will take items too.
I know you said you'd like to give them to a non-religious organization but there is a church in Rogers Park that is helping refugees from Burma. The refugees found the church and the church is now helping them get settled. One family had a new baby at the beginning of the year. They just came here at the end of the summer after being released from a refugee camp in Thailand. If you don't find anywhere else suitable to donate your items, you could contact Judith from St. Paul's Episcopal Church by the Lake at: ____@____.com. I think they'd be grateful for anything you might be willing to donate.
New Moms Inc is a wonderful organization located in North Chicago. www.newmomsinc.org I've donated stuff there last year. They help teen moms get off the streets of Chicago, they are abused or come from abused homes. They provide shelter for these teens moms and they go through a "finishing" school to help them adapt to the world.

I am having a difficult high risk pregnancy, I am having a baby girl. My child's father has been trying to find a job and has come to a dead end every time. I am 6 months pregnant, and I do not have anyone to turn to, I am interested in the things that you are giving away, if you are interested in helping. There is a place in Bucktown called New Moms that houses and teaches parenting and job skills to teenage homeless moms, it's a great organization!

There is a shelter for mothers who have drug/alcohol and other problems at Lake and Ashland. A lot of them are pregnant also. They are always looking for baby and maternity items.
