Baby Is Weaned--but My Breasts Don't Know It Yet

Hi Ladies,
I weaned my 14-month-old son about 2 weeks ago. We were down to one (bedtime) feeding per day, so I just eliminated that one. This is what I did with my daughters, too, my oldest at 10 months and the middle child at 13 months. I experienced no problems with weaning the girls. This time, however, I am still producing a lot of milk. I am engorged and uncomfortable, I leak if I am not wearing a bra, and even holding the baby is excruciating right now! What can I do to help my body get the message that we are done nursing? I have a pump but I haven't used it because obviously I don't want to prolong the issue.
Thanks for your help!

I was told by the lactation consultant that once you are done breastfeeing to take sudafed. Take the dosage it says on the back and within a few weeks the milk will safely dry up and your breasts will go back down to size. I took the sudafed and it worked very well! For me personally, when taking the sudafed it took about 2 days for me to feel relief.

Like a previous post said try sudafed. I had to take that once while nursing and that dropped my supply drastically and I only took two doses. I also when I got engorged I slept with a heating pad on my boobs. The only thing that helped the pain. Hope you body figures it out soon!

Been there, also. I had a horrible time, after weaning my 3rd. I had to wrap them up & when not wrapped , wore a bra with a sports bra over top.

Try the cold cabbage leaves in your bra. Sounds crazy but it really worked for me. I also would use my pump to pump just a tiny bit, enough to take off the pressure, but not enough to completely empty the breast.

UGH!! Been there! That is so uncomfortable. I would take a shower or put a heating pad on them and hand-express a little just to relieve the pressure and pain. After a couple days they slowed and their production and then stopped producing at all. I do not envy you but awesome job for breast feeding so long! What a lucky little man you have!
