Ok so my lo just came down with a virus or so the dr said. He's been coughing and sneezing a lot. He's also been very very sleepy like over the top. Tonight I woke him to try to put some fluids in him by feeding him a bottle and he would just not wake up no matter what I did. He would open his eyes for a quick sec and then just throw his head around almost like he couldn't control it. He's also been having with EVERY diaper change this straight green sometimes yellow water poop I mean no texture to it at all. He'll be 4 months old in a week. I'm a first time mommy and this just scares me cause I don't know what's going on or what to do. But when I tried to wake him up and he acted like that it scared me so bad. So I just wanted to know has anyone gone through this or would you know if this is normal? I'm in much need of advice. Thank you.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well since I'veposted this I've taking my lo to the e.r and pediatrician we are still trying to figure out everything but ee did find out he's apparently allergic to formula in general. We've tried just about everything. His pediatrician has us checking in and now we are trying to figure out what he will tolerate. They also took a sample of his poo and sent it off we are currently waiting on results to that so pretty much its all touch and go right now. His vitals were good and he's still very hydrated we just gotta figure out more in depth what is going on.

Viruses can be very dehydrating, especially on infants. What's his intake like? If he's not taking in enough, he may need to be at a hospital getting an iv. Scary as that is, it's better than him dehydrating.

If my 4 month old wouldn't wake up? I'd be in the ER.

At 4 months? Coughing is hard work, think of how much it takes out of you when you cough.

I understand being scared. I would be too. Please take him to the ER to get him checked out.

Good luck!

I truly hope you have taken your son to the Emergency Room and he is being treated.

Dehydration happens so fast in infants.

I hope he's on the road to recovery.

Trust your instincts. If you feel like he is struggling beyond normal sleepiness, take him to the ER. Dehydration is quick with little ones. If you can't wake up your baby, call 911.

Later, when your baby has been to the emergency room, please post again and update us. I hope by now you have already long since been to the ER. This is not normal reaction to a virus-- especially the "throw his head around like he couldn't control it" and the extreme "sleepiness." Hospital, now.

You need to call the pediatrician or take him to the ER if you think he is having seizures or other complications. Our pediatrician's office has an after hours advice line. If you have the opportunity and means, call or take him to a Children's Hospital.

In situations like this, you should not be relying on the delays from an internet parenting site. This is a great site for general questions about parenting, or even for talking about chronic health issues. But for acute health problems, especially in an infant, you need to get in the habit of calling the pediatrician's on-call number for immediate advice from someone who knows your baby's health situation as well as the resources in your area (ER, urgent care, etc.).

Sometimes waking up a sleepy baby isn't that easy (if he's in a deep sleep), but your baby has a nagging cough, a lot of mucus, and watery green stools. Water poops are common with viruses when there is diarrhea present but also when there is a lot of mucus being swallowed. Under those circumstances, not waking up could indicate a problem especially if there is a fever present.

If you don't know what your pediatrician's office offers in terms of evening, overnight, and weekend telephone services, such as an on-call nurse or a partnership with another pediatrician (especially if your pediatrician is a solo practitioner), call now and find out. You are a young, new mother and you need support.

Sleep is how we fight off disease and illnesses so it's normal to sleep more. A baby, on the other hand, will wake up to eat and wake up often because their tummies are about the size of their fist. So I'd have taken him to the ER and seen if they could wake him up enough to eat.

They need to squirt stuff up his nose then suction it out. Testing for RSV is important in little ones this size because they can't fight off stuff like that very well without help. A lot of little ones with RSV are put in the hospital so they can be in an oxygen tent with humidity. It really helps keep the goo runny and easier for mom to suction it out.

Get him tested for RSV and flu both...

So did you take him to the ER? Just wondering and wanted to tell you to don't hesitate to take your lil one to the ER. Peace of mind. I did it with my first baby plenty of times and each time there was something wrong with his breathing. They are the professionals so let them check it out. If it's nothing, great. but you will feel better about it. I know as first time parents you don't want to be that mom that screams my son is always sick but you should listen to your gut. Good luck and I hope your baby is doing better.

I am glad you took him to the ER. Your health insurance may cover his formula if it is a prescription.
