A friend is 11 days past her due date. All of her previous children have been born naturally without any medication. 2 at home, 1 at a birth center and 1 at the hospial. She does not want to use medication to induce labor, does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone been 11 days or more late?
Thank you so much everyone for all your wonderful advice. I am happy to say that my friend's baby was born today, this morning on St. Patrick's Day at 10am! And on top of that, me also being the doula had to be coached over the phone by the midwife, because she was not able to get there in time, so yes I was a part of helping delivering her baby. Mother and daughter are excellent. The midwife arrived just before the placenta was birthed. My friend had the baby in a water tub that she bought for the delivery. This was her fourth child she delievered in the water. The baby is 8.5lbs and is in good health. Thank you again for all your support. I love this website and I look forward to the day when I get to share the news that I am pregnant! I am not giving up!!! God bless you all.

I was 19 days overdue when they had to induce my labor because I did not have enough fluids and the placentia was not doing it's job anymore. My other two children where on time and quick deliveries (45 min & 3 hrs from leaving my house). My induce was 24 hrs so I would not recommend it unless baby or mom are in danger. I was bedrest with the induced baby and worked out up until my due date with the other two so if she is able to walk around and keep busy it may help.
Hi
I had a girlfriend who is a massage therapist do deep tissue massage on my ankles, feet and shoulders on my due date. My little girl (#5) came 4 days past her due date (she was a natural delivery) and my others have been 1-2 weeks late.
Deep tissue massage will release endorphins and hormones that whould bring on labor.
Best wishes!!
My first was 12 days overdue. That was 11.5 years ago... We did the stress test at about 5 or 6 days I believe and scheduled an induction for a Friday at 8am. He decided to start making his way that Friday at 3:45am and was born at 10:19am with no medication, no complications, and an ounce shy of 9 lbs. My second baby, born 14 months ago was born on her due date, but also started to make her way at 3:45am and was born at 1:11pm with no medication, no complications and an ounce shy of 9 lbs. as well. God is in control. Unless there are signs of problems, let it roll!
I had the EXACT same situation. I wanted natural and was getting more and more past my EDD. I would strongly suggest ACUPUNCTURE, ACUPUNCTURE, and more ACUPUNCTURE. The night after i went for a session I started having unmistakably strong contractions. My acupuncturist explained to me that if the baby and body are ready acupuncture can really be effective in getting those hormones going to begin labor. I believe that if I could have gone back every day it truly would have worked. It has induced labor for many women. Unfortunately, we had some high stress situations going on at the time and I was unable to keep going. I did end up getting induced at 14 days past. I would have waited longer but my doctor was pretty insistent. I have heard of women delivering up to 5 weeks past "due date". I hated being hooked up to an IV but was still able to deliver vaginally without other drugs.
I hope she gives it a try if she hasn't already and I wish her a beautiful delivery! I know how hard that postdue countdown feels.
Adam at Accutonix in Venice is my acupunturist- a great guy!
best of luck-J.
Probably the due date was calculated incorrectly. She should be drinking red raspberry tea now and also after her delivery.
For my firstborn the last 5 weeks I took black and blue cohash. She should not take the cohash unless it is under the direction of a natural practictioner or someone similar who knows correct dosage. It is also only to be taken close to delivery date.
Generally the more babies you have, the faster the labor.
My baby came healthy and without induction 13 days late. I went into a frantic cleaning mode and was rearranging stuff in my bedroom. I breathed a bit of dust and that made me cough, and the cough broke my water. My baby was large though -- 9lbs, 4oz & she never really looked like a newborn. I'm sure your friend and her child will be fine. It is nerve-wracking at the end though. I'm sure you'll have a new baby in your midst in the next few days.
I was 2 weeks late with my first and I'm due tomorrow with my second. Try accupuncture, sex, castor oil and lots of walking!-www.weelicious.com
My cousin was born a month late. This was 30 years ago in Eastern Europe, so it's a little different, but somehow the doctors miscalculated and had my aunt been in the US and it was miscalculated that way, she'd probably have been forced to birth a premature baby. Not saying that's the case, but you asked if anyone had been more than 11 days late...
As for suggestions, just tell her not to stress. There are people on this board who will tell you that dr knows best, but I believe it's more like dr knows best when it's convenient for them. However, be sure that your friend is checked after 14 days past the due date for any distress in the baby or her own system. She does need someone to advocate on her behalf though, so if she has a doula, or someone who's not afraid to stand up to doctors and say "Are you SURE this is necessary?", but sure to take them along.
Take a bath as warm as you can. And walk a few blocks. Due this a few days she will have a baby.
I have never been that late but my friend was 15 days late. Her doctor let her keep going so she could have a natural birth center birth. They were just about to induce her when she started contracting. The baby came in two hours from first contraction.
First, is she sure of her due date? My doctor computed a different one than I did on my second because he dated from my last period. I happened to know the exact date of conception, so the date I computed was three days later.
So by my calculations, I was 10 days "late" when my OB started making noise about inducing (he counted 13 days). Having had my first with the Bradley method, I wanted to go natural again. Although there may not be any scientific proof that sex brings labor on, it is known that there are natural prostaglandins in semen. My advice is to try it--but perhaps wait until the morning. I went into labor at midnight and boy, did I miss the sleep!
first i would like to remind you that pregnancy and birth and life in general is not predictable, even by doctors. to err is to be human. the docs always say that there is two weeks of leeway on the due date either before or after it, so there is a whole month that the docs could have been of on the date.
i was 10 days over due with my third. i was induced with my first but not with my last two, my second was four days early at home birth. my third was in the hospital and ten days late. i was a lot less relaxed during my third pregnancy. i know that has a lot to do with how labor and birth turn out.
tell her to do something she has always wanted or needed to do to relax, if its a night at home without the kids, take a bubble bath or go get a massage, or even a nice walk on the beach with just the hubby. she needs to find her way meditation. that should work.
for me and my third pregnancy, i was stressed from not being able to do another home birth and i was new to my neighborhood so i had no one to throw me a shower and i was so unprepared for the baby and had no money, and i wasn't going to go ask somebody to do it. so what happened was i made my birth plan very strict i went to the hospital and told them about it and found them to be accommodating to EVERYTHING on my list, which relieved a lot of my stress from that issue. then i thought i would let off some steam and complain to my very good old friend (we had known each other since we were 3) that i didnt have a shower and that i was three days overdue (at the time) so she said, "Sarah!! i cant believe you didnt have a baby shower! im throwing you one, tell everyone to come over in a week, whether or not the baby comes!" and as luck would have it the baby had not come and i was up to ten days overdue, so i had my pathetic little shower, but it was great! after everyone left i was putting baby stuff away and talking to my mother who was in town for the shower, while my hubby sat and watched the superbowl. right after i put the last thing away, i immediately went into labor!
we always joke that i couldn't give birth unless i had a baby shower!
whatever she does decide to try, tell her NEVER to use Castor oil. ive known too many women who were miserable after using it. for some it induced labor for some it did not, but for all it induced diarrhea and vomiting.
My 2nd child was 10 days past due. I stopped feeling movement, so they did a stress test, and there wasn't much amniotic fluid lest, so I was induced. and it was the hardest labor EVER! I hadn't dialated at all. and, when he came out, very little liquid came w/ him.
Yes, I was 15 days late on #4 kid. All was good in the end. It was very scarey and frustrating, but the Doctor was right and we were both healthy and fine. I assume she is counting and timing the babies movement. That is important.
Dear J., My name is P. and I was two weeks late with my second son . Itried walking alot and it did help . I have suggested this to friends and they said it helped also .Some times we have just miscaculated our dates . Good luck and a happy and safe delivery . P.
I was 2 week past due! We should start a club. ;)
When Kaiser was done with me being "done", I refused pitocin but did go on with the sex, walking, tea route...got to 3 cm with no contrax...they AROM me, contrax started right away. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of AROM, but I chose that over the pit. GOod luck!!
First off, if her Dr. wants to induce, she can tell him that according to ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) states that post-term pregnancies should not be induced unless there is a medical issue, until after 42 weeks. With that said, she may be able to buy a few days.
Tell her to walk a lot, eat spicy (very spicy) food, drink Red leaf Raspberry tea made VERY strong, and have a lot of sex. She also needs to make sure she "enjoys" the sex. This will release the hormones that can cause contractions.
It's possible they were off on the due date, and that little one knows the best time to come out.
Castor Oil works in about 50% of women to induce labor. Completely natural. I took some the day my water broke. My water broke at Noon, took the castor oil at 5pm, had major diarreah on&off until 11pm, went into labor and delivered at 2am. Also, I used a breast pump - 20 minutes on 20 minutes off - from 5pm to 10pm.
I took about 4 "shots" of castor oil. I recommend a chaser - something bubbly helps. The castor oil doesn't taste bad, it's the consistancy of it that's a little unappealing.
Her baby is now at risk. She cannot wait any longer. After a week, her baby will start to get dry and irritated because the vernix(white, gooey protective stuff) will go away. It will also make it more painful for her baby to be born. Tell her to bite the bullet and go to the hospital to be induced. Her baby's health is at risk at this point.
I've always heard the new old wives tale of eating a salad that has a dressing high in balsamic vinegar. She could always give that a try. At worst, she could have a pretty good salad.
Accupunture!!! I was schedule to be induced when my daughter was almost 2 weeks late. I did accupunture for two days and two days later she came on her own, at 42 weeks on the dot!
Its better to be safe and follow your MD.s advise, and have a healthy baby......Pregnant women have to trust their physicians they know best as this is what they do on a daily basis...
If she is in good health, tell her to start walking. I did that with my older two and accidentally did it with my third! He came a week early, one day after I went out on a walking field trip with my daughter! It's good for hr to get the stamina up for labor even if it doesn't "kick things into motion"
Good luck to you and your friend :)~V
This is probably an old wives' tale but try getting a spa pedicure. I had heard that the spa massage chair is sometimes associated with the onset of labor. I didnt believe it and finally splurged on a pedicure shortly before my due date. The chair was just heaven on my back and was so relaxing. Sure enough, my water broke that evening. Even if it doesnt work your friend will have great looking toes and a great back massage.
Wow, How's that for the universe working in her favor? My Son was born on St. Patrick's Day, too.
I wish her and the baby and happy and healthy life.
i was 7 days over due with my 1st child. my labor was induced because while monitoring my contractions the baby's heartbeat would go down. unfortunately, your friend may not have a choice when it comes to inducing depending on the health of the baby. good luck!
Hi there,
I was 10 days over my due date. I was induced after 7 days past my due date, and then it took 3 days for the baby to come by C-Section after I only dialated to 3. If I would have known that was going to happen, I would have just left the hospital the next day. So disapointing!!! Anyway don't worry, babies are born when they are ready. For my next baby, I will wait it out.
Good luck with your new baby!
14 days late. no problem, healthy birth, no drugs no induction... Babies are ready when they are ready... I realized that the doc's were counting from my last period, but I got pregnant two weeks later... I knew exactly when we got pregnant... Not that often we are that careless...
Good luck!
R.
Has your friend tried acupuncture to help induce her labor?
The doctor can tell if she is past due or not. If she is she can jog, take a ride on a bumpy road, or do a lot of walking. My second son went until he was over 3 weeks due...we were in Africa and the doctors thought I miscalculated. He was definitely postmature...skin sloughing off, almost head control and able to follow with the eyes, finger and toe nails needed cutting and about 9 lbs. The doctors today also can tell how big baby is...you don't want him to get too big or delivery can be real rough on mom. Tell her to go to the doctor...they can break the water that may indue the labor like it did in my 3rd son:)

The best thing to do is to research the risk of Pitocin and the risk of overworking the Placenta.
I had an all natural birth with the exception of use of Pitocin at the last minute. For some reason I was not holding my amniotic fluids.
From what I understand, the big issue with the use of Pitocin is not to continue use for too long...over 12 hours (?).
It is just a decision Mom will have to make. While there is time, make it an educated decision.
Yes, I had a baby 10 days past the due date, and let me tell you, I would never do it again. I was nervous to be induced, but after asking the doctor what they used to do in the olden days (before medication), and learning that that is the reason for so many still borns back then, I decided to appreciate the one of the luxeries of advancements in medicine! Being induced was actually so nice (probably the nicest labor I have ever had-you could control the intensity of the contractions according to how ready my body was). FYI I would never let it go so long over due again. My daughter, as I like to put it, was definitely over cooked. She was more than ready to come out. She was one big baby with a double chin and all. In fact, I even saw fear in the doctors eyes when her head come out. Let's just say, that ever since then, I have insisted from the get go, that I do not go 1 day over ( and not just for my own comfort sakes, but because the baby is just plain ready--sometimes they just need a little help getting out.
I say do alot of walking! And alot of praying! I'm surprised that her dr. midwife or who ever isn't insisting that she be induced. I've heard alot about if you go over, especially that many days that you are putting your self in danger but mostly the baby because the plasenta starts breaking down plus their is less fluid in the womb to protect the baby.
To the single woman wanting to be a mother. I'd look into adoption. Rather it's a newborn an older child. Even if the child is from another country. Every child deserves someone to love & care for him or her.
I was born weeks past due and I have had health problems my entire life.
