D..
Use an empirical approach and don't give him anything with eggs in it for a month. Then try a little bit again.
They can test for it, but I think he needs to be older to do that.
Good luck!
My 5 month old suddenly developed a hoarse voice a little more than 24 hours ago. No fever, no nasal symptoms, and he hasnt had any prolonged crying spells that could have caused it. I did, however, give him egg yolk for the first time on the day it started. I know hoarseness can be a symptom of food allergy ... But can it be the only symptom?? He hasn't had any rashnor difficulty breathing. I am going to take him to the doctor tomorrow, and I suspect it is probably just a virus, but I was wondering about a possible link to the eggs.
FYI On current feeding guidelines:
Egg whites are highly allergenic, and it USED to be recommended to wait until one year. Egg yolk is NOT highly allergenic and has never been restricted. In fact it is a common first food in many parts of the world, including eastern Europe, where my family is from. In any case, the thoughts on allergenic foods have recently changed and more foods (including eggs) are "allowed" in families without food allergies.
In addition, the recommendation for starting solids continues to be 4-6 months. If I had enough mill to exclusively breastfeed I'd hold off until 6 months I would, but alas, I do not and have started at a reasonable time and under the advice of my sons pediatrician.
The pediatrician thinks he has a viral infection, but to be safe, I'll hold off on egg yolk for a while and reintroduce cautiously.

That is my fiancé's reaction to egg allergy. That is his only reaction.
In addition, food before 6 months is not recommended. As well why on earth would you start with a food that is a known common allergen?
My supply was NEVER able to keep up with my son's needs, that is what formula was there for. My son did not eat solids until closer to 7months when the doc said "Ok" and my son showed signs of readiness.
My 6 year old grandson has the same thing. He says he's very thirsty. I do think it's a virus or something like croup. He's not coughing or feverish or anything. Doc is a good choice in this case.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Baby's don't need food. They need their breast milk or formula first. They shouldn't even eat any food until they are at least 6 months old and that should be cereal if some sort. It should be completely runny and not have any substance to it.
Food, before a year old, should only be used to teach a baby how to chew and swallow, not for nutrition. They get their nutrition from their breast milk or formula. By giving them food instead they are not getting the nutrients they need to grow and develop.
Of course we always give them food and watch how they eat it up. They do that because they're starving from lack of vitamins and nutrients in the food we give them.
So please, even if the doc said it was okay, baby's tummy is just not ready for food yet. It sits there and rots because they can't digest it yet. Then the get gas and nasty burps....yuck.
Wait another month or two before giving food to your baby, they're just not old enough yet. They need their formula or breast milk now. They can eat food later.
Baby food is basically flavored goo. It loses almost all of the nutrition it has in it while it's being made and then it sits waiting to be purchased then sits until baby eats it. By this time it has minimal nutrition. That's from Del Monte or Gerber. I called them one time because I had been given a bunch of stage 3 baby food and it had just expired a few days later. The lady told me that it had no nutrition in it at all by that point. It was nothing more than flavored goo. So I stopped using baby food at all and started using our own food just blended up or as the kids got older I'd use my Pampered Chef chopper.
I have no idea - but why would you give a 5 month old eggs? I get trying those later on, but you really should start with veggies only...then add in fruits, and meats later on.
I would think giving a baby eggs would be on the same list as no honey, peanut butter, and OJ.
It might be he's got some teeth coming in.
Some babies drool a lot when their gums start getting itchy.
If he's swallowing the saliva or it's running down his throat, it might account for a hoarse voice for awhile.
You're not supposed to start eggs until one year old. Yes, it could be an indication of an egg allergy or sensitivity. You may see "only" one symptom being a hoarse voice but something is CAUSING the hoarse voice and he could very well be having internal issues you're not aware of.
