Baby Has a Snorty, Stuffy Nose All the Time

My baby is 3 months old, and since the day he was born, he has had a snorty, stuffy nose, i.e., severe congestion in his nose all the time. Our pediatrician said that it was just common newborn stuff, but he is now 3 months, and it has not improved at all. At times, it is hard for him to eat since he is so congested. What could this be? Does anyone have any ideas? We thought it could be allergies, but can a baby have allergies right off the bat? I feel bad for the little guy. We don't know what we can do or where to go to figure this out. Help!

What can I do next?

Have you tried flushing his sinuses with the baby saline stuff? My daughter (5 mo now) had a pretty nasty little bug not to long ago and I rinsed her with that stuff a couple times a day and used the aspirator. It might be worth a shot.

hey there, was just reading... and yes!! I do believe babies of all ages can have allergies, and slight food intolerances, even when nursing.... like cows milk if the mother drinks it and baby gets it through nursing. My daughter had some allergies and out grew them and she is only almost 3 years old!! go with your gut feeling!

Hi S.,

We also have that same problem with my son who is now 4-months old. We bought a cool air/cold water humidifier (from Target) that we switched on at night and that seemed to help him. We also used the saline drops (Little Noses) just before he would be due a feed, and that made him comfortable while I nursed him.

Good luck!

S.:

I would suspect allergies. If you are breastfeeding put breastmilk in his nose!.

Allergies are not easy to sort out but it can be done. This is something I often help parents with.

My daughter had the same problem. She is six months now and it has gone away. I used saline solution in her nose (Little Noses). I would put a couple drops in each nostril before I nursed her.

My 3month old has the "stuffy" problem as well. My doctor told us to put a humidifier in his room at night. It has helped with the congestion. Also, we bought infant saline nose drops. I have used those (just a drop or 2 in each nostril) then I use the aspirator and it works great. The drops loosen up the mucous in the nose.
Hope this helps.

My 3 month old is exactly the same! It seems like every two weeks or so I call the pediatrician to ask if this should still be going on this long. We have done the cool mist humidifier, the nose drop and the nasal aspirator. Those don't seem to help too much, but the one thing that does seem to help is when he is in a sitting position (like in his bouncy chair or swing) Even though the pediatrician didn't offer much of a solution, he did mention to me that a healthy baby won't suffocate from nasal congestion, and that since babies only breathe through their noses, even the smallest bit of mucous can cause a "rattling" sound.

S.,
My little guy has also had this problem, the Dr put him on Singular (in case it was alergies). Prior to this, I also tried the nasal drops, humidifier, etc. He is now almost 14 months old and it hasn't cleared up. I took him to an Ear, Nose Throat dr and we are in the process of eliminating some things. He seems to have fluid in the ear (but not an ear infection) which can cause the nose to run. It can also be his adnoids. It can also be just chronic nasal congestion.

My daughter did the same thing. Her dr. changed her to soy formula and the same day all her symptoms went away.

Congestion can be a sign of milk allergy. Other potential symptoms can be dark circles around the eyes, a reddish ring around the anus, skin rash, gassiness, diarrhea. Newborns can have allergies.

I would bring it up to your doc again.

My son is 10 months old and his nose has ran and he has coughed since the day he was born. I have taken him to the doctor time after time and am always told his lungs are clear and that it is probably allergies. He is always congested, sometimes he can barely drink a bottle. I fell horrible for him all the time but the doctor said it is allergies. I try to give him benadryl but it makes him so sleepy. I wish I could take over the allergies for him and let him be allergy free.
good luck to you and your little guy
