Baby Has a Cold

It is very frustrating when my little one gets a cold because she has such a hard time. She can't fall asleep or does not stay asleep long due to her stuffy nose. She cries and screams because she is so tired and just wants to sleep but cannot b/c of the congestion.
I have a humidifier with a vicks solution going in the room all day and night, I do aspirate her nose and use the saline spray. I am giving her fluids too. I even bought the Puffs Vicks facial tissues (great product BTW)
There aren't any cold medications out there for any child under 3 or 4.
Does anyone have any other solutions or tricks they have tried to help relieve the symptoms? I hate to see her so uncomfortable. (She is just 14 months old)
Thanks!

So What Happened?

After 10 days, the congestion got better and she is fine now.
I know, "Just a cold", but I really hate that there isn't more we can do for the symptoms.
The Dr. gave me a Triminic Cold and Cough liquid and I was to give her 1 cc only and only at bedtime. I gave her even less than the 1 cc and found that the dosage made her hyper for a bit, but never relieved any of the symptoms. So I won't be bothering with that anymore. I had heard that cold meds do that....the small dosages isn't enough to take care of the symptoms, but it is still enough for them to get side effects.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and for your support!

Hi,
My son is 13months and he gets sick every 15 days or so. Mostly what other parents have mentioned are great. Couple of other things are run your shower really hot and sit in the bathroom with your daughter to losen up her stuffy nose and her chest. I also rub Vics Vapor Rub on my son's chest (the one for 3 months and over) and make sure it's covered with his shirt. I also use a pillow for his head so he can breath little better. If he has temp I will give him Motrin which will help him fall asleep. I stay away from milk since it was cause him to throw everything up. A nurse also told me that I can pump his nose (the pumper they give you at the hospital when they are first born) which helps alot also. She said I can put it far back as it will go (apparently it will not hurt them) which sometimes will pick up that mucas that is stuck in his throat. I give him a bath, clean his nose and put him to sleep. If it's really bad, I will bring his carseat, sit it so it will sit against the crib or you can put it in the crib and have her fall asleep like that. It will help her breath better since she is elivated. This actually helped me one time when he couldn't breath.
Good Luck!

Put Vicks rub on the bottom of her feet and cover with socks. The vapors still get to her yet are not right in her face. It works! Keep the fluids going, but not so much milk. Not too much water either. Try mostly Pedialite and juice. If you speak with her doctor he or she may be able to give you a prescription for Rondec syrup. It's a cold medicine that little ones can take, but can't be bought over the counter. It works really well.

She's too young to give a pillow, but raise her mattress by putting towels underneath it to raise her head and help her breathe. Also, have her ears checked if she's really having a hard time sleeping. Ears hurt much worse when lying down.
It sounds like you're doing a lot already, I just wanted to add this. Hope it helps.

Get the hot shower going for 5 minute or so with the door closed, then take her in to the bathroom. Either let her play on the floor, or hold her. Keep the shower running the whole time, and the steam will help her loosen that nose up!

Also, during the day she can take a shower with you. It won't be as hot, obviously, but it'll still help loosen that snot.

I'm sorry. Colds suck!

Hey Patti,

You seem to be doing all you can to make her comfortable. The only other suggestions I have is to elevate her crib a little so her nose will be able to drain. You could also try Tylenol I am not sure it will help but it may help her to be a little more comfortable. I would also try to steam up the bathroom and give her a nice warm bath sometimes the steam can help loosen up the mucus. I always gave my kids a bath even when they were sick it makes them feel better and it relaxes them. Hang in there it should pass in a few days!! Good luck

P., all those cold medicine have been ruled out as unsafe for children under a certain age. Mine are 4 years old and I don't use them for them. Drinking plenty of water is supposed to help reduce the mucus in her nose. Eventually she will learn how to blow her nose and that will help, as of now, for her age, I believe you're doing everything right. If you can reduce the amount of milk she's drinking as that is supposed to cause building up the mucus
good luck
