What happened to Stella?

Can't go wrong with Stella or Vivienne, both sophisticated and gorgeous.

Vivienne. Vivienne seems timeless and elegant and oh so francais. Sierra has a beautiful sound, but it seems trendy, like it'll sound dated in 10 or 15 years. Vivienne will always be beautiful.

Vivienne, no question. Cute for a baby, little girl and teen, sophisticated enough for an adult woman, and has good nicknames (Vi, Viv, Vivi) built in.

Sierra is nice, but more trendy--which is not my thing as far as names.

Vivienne. Beautiful and more classic to me. Also and maybe more importantly, I like to picture a name on a 50 year old when considering a name. Sierra is a young person's name to me.

I just don't see Sierra as a name that will "age" well as your daughter ages; to be really frank it sounds trendy, whereas Vivienne (or Vivien or Vivian) sounds old-fashioned to some but classic to me. I kind of want to mentally follow the word "Sierra" with either "...Club" or "...Nevada Mountains" in my mind. It's pretty for sure, but for me it always has those associations.

I know a family that gave a child a very, very cutesy name (I don't want to identify it but it was a given name, not a kiddie nickname that could be ditched later in favor of some original, "older" name) and it did not age well at all with that child. By the time she was about 12 it seemed way too young for her. I can't imagine her using it as an adult. Sierra's absolutely not as far gone as that name was, but it did show me that it's good to think way ahead to how a name will wear when a child is an adult, and to think about whether the name has other associations (even positive ones like the Sierra Club).

I *think* Sierra is a more popular name. But I don't keep up on the baby name popularity list. So, I personally like Vivienne better. It's a pretty name and I don't believe it's as common as Sierra. Do you have a middle name you are set on? If you do, like your moms name or something like that, it could change my opinion based on flow.

It's hard to say emphatically because I don't what your last name is. But if both sound good in your baby's full name, I'd go with Vivienne.

I like Vivienne. (It's not the same as Vivian, so don't change the spelling. Just make sure that you teach people how to pronounce your daugher's name: VI-VI-ENNNNN. Not VI-VI-UN, which is how Vivian is pronounced.)

And Sierra is a stripper name. It's the kind of name that a person chooses for herself in select crowds.

There are too many Sierras right now.

I prefer Vivienne, though I would spell it Vivian to make life a whole lot easier.

***EDIT***
Come on now Looloo, she asked which name you liked, not how many strip joints it took you to visit before hearing the name Sierra. This is likely an expectant mom, who has chosen a couple of possible names for her child.
***********
They are both very pretty names and it depends on your preference. I see everyone feels Sierra is trendy and Vivienne is classic.

Are you and your husband more trendy or classic? Does it flow well with the other names she will have? Do you have other children? Does the name flow with your other children's names?

For those who think Vivienne sounds like an old lady, that old lady was a young girl at one time.

As for the name Sierra, it is rather popular right now, as some names go through a phase. There are a couple of different spellings, but then of course you will have to go through the, "Sierra with an S" process. Yes, there are Sierra mountains, but the name has become more popular than the association with a mountain.

We chose names specifically based on mountains. My husband is Native American and his name means where two mountains meet. As it turns out, she is a spitting image of him.

Sierra is a much more popular name right now.

I knew one girl named Vivian...and I never heard the name again. To me, it's an old name.

My favorite name is Carissa.

With that being said, I think of Sierra as a blonde or light hair. The Vivian I knew had dark hair.

Some of my friends had a couple names---But, waited to see which name would fit after they saw the baby.

Sierra hands down. Vivienne is more old fashioned of a name and I'm not that in to it.

Sierra, definitely. Vivienne is more old-fashioned and makes me think of an old lady, not a little girl!
