I've been trying to give my 3 week old baby formula as well as breast milk, she's getting the bottle because she had problems with latching on. The problem is, I've tried Enfamil and almost everytime she drinks that she throws it back up eventually, and I just tried Similac today and 2min after she drank 3/4 of an ounce she threw that up as well...any suggestions as to what I could give her or should i just keep going with the enfamil and hope for the best?? I am pumping, so she is getting the breast milk, the problem is I'm not producing enough milk every time I pump, so I'm using the formula to supplement. This way I know she is getting enough to eat.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your suggestions...
Lactation Consultant, I've been and we still had problems which is why I went to pumping in the first place. But thank you for that suggestion.
So I'm still pumping, and supplementing with Enfamil Gentlease which Madison is doing really well with, since being on it since friday she has not thrown it up ( spit up twice a little) and she isn't constipated which became my next fear would happen after it happened to my nephew.
Thank you all for your help and your suggestions. They were greatly appreciated!

I tried Good Start to supplement. My pediatrician told me that it is easier on their little tummies. Good luck.

You may need to switch to a soy based formula. I did the same thing with my girl. When I went back to work, I had to supplement her breast milk with formula and I tried Enfamil, which she spit up. I switched to Isomil soy, which is Similac, and it worked better. Enfamil also makes a soy and I have used that in the past too. You might want to run it by your pediatrician to be sure.

oh geez -- I would call your pediatrician for a suggestion. Some babies have problems with undigestible milk proteins in formula and need a special formula or they vomit and fail to gain weight. It can be an allergy or an intolerance (so not a histamine reaction necessarily but just inability to digest it easily). Those formulas can get quite expensive so I might think about renting a commercial/hospital grade pump from a pharmacy that rents one and get your supply up to do all breastmilk instead if you can. Good luck!

Is she doing this only with the formula? It may be an early sign of an allergy. Call the pediatrician and find out. Either way, PUMP PUMP PUMP so that she has something to eat while you figure it all out!

There are different types of formulas within the Enfamil and Smilac lines....I had problems with spit up and gas on the regular formula...I had to use Enfamil Nutramigen...extremely gentle sensitive kind...Worked like a charm for all three...No you should not have to nor should your baby have to endure this. You may have to try a few formulas before you get the right one. Congrats!

Instead of continuing down the formula track, I would contact a lactation consultant or a Le Leche League person for help with latch. Breastmilk is best and formula is expensive...particularly if she doesn't seem keen on two of the most common types. Even if you have to pay a lactation consultant, it would still be less expensive than 2 weeks worth of formula!

Havew you seen a lactation consultant? That's the way you'll solve the latch problem, not by giving formula. Early supplmentation, regular supplementation will make you produce less milk. See a professional to help with the latch issue and get you to pump more efficiently - the more formula your baby eats, the less breastmilk you're going to produce

I was in your same exact situation 5 months ago, minus the formula issue. My son couldnt latch on well for almost 6 weeks, I started insisting every feeding little by little till he finally did. I had to drink soooo much water, at least half a gallon and I started taking fenu greek. Baby will need to stimulate your milk flow by sucking. If you keep introducing only the bottle, it will become more difficult for them to latch on. It is tough, extremely tough especially because baby might want to start sucking all day. Of course, my advice is based on encouraging you to breastfeed and not be
discouraged. If you opt to formula feed....definitely seek alternatives with your pediatrician. Best of luck!

My son was constantly spitting up when we fed him enfamil premium. I even tried the enfamil with added rice with no luck. He did fine on the regular enfamil (make sure you look at the label, the premium and the non-premium have - or had - almost the same label). Obviously he didn't like the extra 'premium' ingredients.

Consult a lactation specialist-in the meantime, try Nutramigen
