Baby Food and Stool

I don't know if need to call the pediatrician about this or if it is normal. My son started eating baby food about two weeks ago. I know his stool will no longer be loose and soft but instead firmer. The last couple of days though his stool has been the same consistency of an adult's stool...like little terds for lack of better description. He went yesterday and this morning. Sometimes he goes every other day. Is this normal or is he dehydrated. Are there certain baby foods that cause more constipation than others? I was hesitant on starting him on food for this same reason. Someone ease my concerns please :)

What can I do next?

It sounds like he may be a little constipated. Bananas, applesauce and cereal have a tendency to cause this. If you give him some prunes daily, he will most likely overcome this issue. I've heard of babies who don't poop for a week or more....and doctors aren't alarmed. But, for your baby's comfort, I would suggest introducing prunes to help ease difficulty in pooping. Best of luck!

It's normal... once they start eating solid foods their poo will never be the same. If you are concerned, I would try giving him some water it will flush him out and make it a little softer but I wouldn't be nervous about it. Hope this helped a little. =)

My daughter did this too when i started her on solids. She even got a little constipated. I gave her baby prunes or baby pears once a day and mixed apple juice with water for her to drink with each meal.

Yep, the turds are normal. As long as they aren't hard, like rocks, it's completely normal. My daughter has had the turds since she started solid foods. Then it kinda changes again when they go to "real" food. My daughter went every other day until solid foods, then after like 2 weeks on solids, she was going everyday. I don't know what foods cause constipation, I do know bananas do for adults, not sure about babies though. Good luck!

Anytime you have questions or concerns, call your baby's doctor. That is what they're there for. The doctor will be able to ease your mind and suggest foods to help ease your baby's discomfort (if any).
I know when I started my baby on solids, his BMs definitely changed and became firmer. It took him awhile to become "regular" as well after solids were introduced.
If your baby seems constipated (straining or having BMs that are hard as rocks), try to increase fluids, even just water, add just very little prune juice to his formula, give him more pears or applesauce. That might help.

My pediatrician once told me it's not the quantity of the poop, but the consistency that matters. So the fact that he doesn't poop every day is not a problem, but little turds do sound dry to me. I would try to make sure he's drinking at least one sippy cup full of liquid a day. If he's not interested in water, mix a few oz. of juice in there and he'll drink it right up. Fruit also has a lot of water in it. So if he's refusing the sippy, see if he'll eat more fruit.
