I started my twin girls at 6 months. I went and bought a food processer and made my baby food myself. I did a search and found loads of receipes.....it was easy....and I had control of what went into their bodies.

I wouldn't start until she is at least 16 weeks. Slowly let her body adjust to the changes in diet. Good luck

6 months is when babies produce enzymes that allow them to digest both cereals and jar foods or basically anything other than formula or breastmilk. Waiting for both that time frame as well as when they show signs of readiness betters your chances of them not getting food intolerances or food allergies (both of which are not fun to deal with...watching diets, having fussy child with dark circles under the eyes and constant sinus and ear congestion, eczema, or allergy reactions like hives or other rashes, etc.)

On a side note...Have you tried giving her extra fish oils (dha supplementation)? That in addition to my removing cows milk from my diet (I was nursing) stopped my son from spitting up and fussing all the time. We were told it was reflux, but he really had trouble with the milk...milk based formula could do the same.

Good luck and God Bless!

i've always heard 6 months, but I started my oldest at about 4 1/2 months, and my middle at 6 mo or so. go with what your pediatrician says, especially since he/she has her on cereal already.

I introduced each of my five at about 6 months also. The general rule is, when they no longer thrust their tongue forward then they are probably ready to try solid foods. Just remember to start with one food at a time for two to three days in case they have allegeric reactions it is easier to pinpoint the allergy that way.

Usually its not until they're 5 or 6 months old. Sometimes later than that. They're little intestines aren't ready for that yet. Ask your doctor on your next well baby visit. I don't know if you're familiar with the book "What to expect when your expecting", but there is another one out called "What to expect the first year". I used this book even with my second one. The time span between the two were a few years apart.

Yup, about 6 mos is the standard although if you choose to wait til later it's your perogative as the Mommy. At 9 weeks old you won't need to worry about buying a trillion of those little jars for a while! LOL!

Around six months is the time to start. You will want to try one food at a time, for 4-5 days, to make sure that she is not allergic to the food.

I didn't start feeding my twins food from a jar until about 5 1/2 months. It was the prefect time for my girls.

Definitely wait until 5-6 months to introduce jar food. I understand that it is doctors orders, but at 9 weeks, her little digestive system is probably not even ready for cereal. I agree about removing cow's milk from her diet as a start to try to deal with the spitting up. As a pediatric chiropractor, there are other reasons she may be spitting up (other than nutritional, I mean). If there was any birth trauma (difficulty with progression, forceps/vacuum/cesarean delivery, extra forces during delivery, etc), there may be a physical reason. The area of the body where the apex of their spinal curve is in utero is the same area that gets additional forces when we diaper, when they are in their carseats, etc. and this is the area where nerves communicate with the digestive system. Sometimes simple procedures like chiropractic adjustments or craniosacral therapy can remove that stress and she'll have less spitting up. You can find chiropractors that specialize in working with babies as new as yours at www.icpa4kids.org; you can search for craniosacral therapists at www.upledger.com (call to make sure they work with babies, as not all do).

Good luck.

Yours in health,
Dr. Alyssa

We too waited until about six months... and started on mashed up banana... just mush it up before you open the peel... and you can feed her straight from the peel. :)

Good luck!

when she can swallow it with out the thrust reflex kicking in. the thrust reflex is the natural reflex infants have to push their tounges out (which pushes any object such as food out). this can happen as early as 3-4 months.

I think it's generally 4-6 months...but our doctor said that they don't NEED it until 6-7 months. They should get all of their nutrients from the milk. When you are starting them at 4 months or so you are just preparing them and helping them practice the new technique. Personally, I am waiting until closer to the 6 month mark for our daughter. I have tried the cereal for her but she doesn't care for it and gets frustrated with it.

Hey!

My sister had to add cereal to her son's bottle of formula when he was a baby (doc. orders too) b/c he spit up so much - he had reflux I think - and colic too. She wasn't crazy about putting cereal in his bottle but b/c he spit up so much it seemed to help him & she was all for helping him, of course. They ended up switching him to alimentum formula b/c he was allergic to the milk.

She didn't start him on any kind of other solid food, like baby food in the jars, until he was 6 months old - eventhough he continued to have cereal in his bottle until he was weaned.

So, my suggestion is to keep doing what your doc. suggests ... but don't start any other food until she's 6 months (or ready). I remember with my 1st baby I was so excited to do all the "firsts" that come with a new baby but I'd hold off on baby food until she's ready -- Their little systems just aren't ready for the stress of solid food until then. And remember to enjoy the time you have now when all you have to be concerned with is feeding her from the bottle -- she'll be on more mature food the rest of her life. Enjoy the simple things now. :)

Oh yeah & like someone else mentioned - I've heard of alot of success stories of babies going to the chiropractor for things such as colic & reflux. I went to the chiropractor all during my pregnancy & my baby girl has been several times since she was 3 weeks old. (her adjustment helped her digestive system)

Hope all goes well for you and her little one. Have a great day!! :)

I also give my child cereal in her bottle. But not for the reason you do. It just at her last bottle before going to bed it helps her sleep all night. But I would wait to give her baby food till she is about 5-6mo.

Anywhere between 4 and 6 months. At 4 months we started feeding our daughter baby cereal in a bowl. It all depends on the parenta.
