Try the gerber 1st foods organic prunes. And switch up the cereal for variety, oatmeal seems to move through my little one pretty well.
My 6mth old has been eating rice cereal for a couple of months and the Dr said it was time to start more solids since she is sitting up and showing other signs she is ready. We started giving her a little bit of veggies in the am & then continued with rice cereal in the evening (she is still getting 24+ oz of formula as well) Since we started adding veggies she has been up a few nights constipated & unable to sleep. Has anyone else had this problem? I have read about fruit and veggie combos that help with this anyone have any ideas? Thanks for the advice :)

I had a problem with rice cereal constipating my son, so I started mixing in the single grain oatmeal cereal and then just switched to the mixed grain cereal. It really seemed to help. We also use juice to mix his cereal instead of formula.
Good luck!
Here's something new mommies never find out until it's too late. Applesauce, applesauce, applesauce, put it in the cereal and feed it after the veggies. The high fiber will keep the constipation away. Also STAY AWAY FROM Banana's, why baby food makers make it in a "one" is beside me. Banana's will "stop them up" bad, so if your child has diarrhea then get some bananas, but otherwise stay away from them until your child is older (a year) and then do it slowly.
Applesauce, applesauce, applesauce, every time, every solid food meal. Also Dark Karo syrup in her formula, 1 teaspoon per 6 oz, that will help you get her past her current state until the applesauce can regulate her. I always keep "Fleet Glycerin Suppositories" for children on hand. If I noticed that she didn't have a bowel movement in over 48 hours, and she acted in pain, I would use a half of a one on her(I would cut one down the middle) and a bowel movement normally comes within 10 -15 minutes. I have two kids and I've only had to do it a few times with each one, but it's better than letting them cry in pain. It's simply and easy.
Hope this helps.
Rice cereal only for baby (or with only a few veggies) is recipe for constipation. 6 mos old babies can eat quite a bit of variety. Get your food processor out (or hand grinder) to make pureed plums, beets, sweet potatoes, squash, peas, pears, peaches, etc.) If you choose to puree these items from a can instead of fresh, that's okay, just be sure to rinse off any syrup in your colander. Store in tupperware in the fridge, and at mealtime, mix 2-3 tsps. per serving of rice cereal. Make sure consistency isn't too thick ... add water as needed. In fact, water is key to help with constipation. Try giving sips of water (or bottle if you don't want to use a cup) every 4-6 bites. Plums/prunes are especially good for helping baby through the transition to solids, and to ease inevitable constipation. Introduce one new food every 3-4 days to evaluate for allergic reactions. Have fun ... your baby will never be so non-picky as she is right now! Plus, this approach is TONS cheaper than buying all jar baby food. Feel free to augment with jars of baby meats as you feel she is ready.
Hi M.,
I would add acidapholis and cod liver oil to your babies food. You can find both at a healh food store. The brand Nordic Naturals makes a liquid form of cod liver oil for children that tastes like fruit. They make baby forms of acidapholis although the I use the regular capsuls on my 4 month old and he handles it fine. Just break open the capsule and mix it with her bottle. Not only are these great for babies to take for their health they will loosen up her stools as well. My sister had success with pear juice for her baby but your daughter might be a little young for that.
Good luck to you,
S.
Give her just a tiny bit of prunes.
You might ask your doctor their opinion on juisce at that age, but with my daughter I give her a little watered down apple juice and it has helped to keep her pretty regular. She is now a year and a half, but I have been doing this since she was about six months old. My doctor was ok with it, but I know that some have differing opinions.
M., Well I'm the one thats gonna tell you feed your daughter. You have started her on veggies go with the fruit and you can give her all the cereals not just the rice. Paint a rainbow in her belly. My daughter will be 8 months old on July 14 we have just moved her up too 3rd foods and for breakfast sunday morning she had a piece of toast and fed it to herself. We the parents have to live with these babies so so when it comes to you and your daughter you have to do whats best for her including feeding her. We get to raise our children for the next 18 years if not more in some cases. Just because a DR. went to school doesn't mean he knows what's best for every child. I have 4 of my own and I never went by the book or the Dr. I went by each individual child.
My 4 th daughter was eating 8 oz bottles every 4 hours at 3 1/2 months she wouldn't eat the cereal so I put fruit in it and she ate it, I also started veggies and we eat all of the cereals. Each morning we have a different one and she has 5 jars of food a day.
Too much cereal can cause constipation along with the veggies so if you add in a fruit it will even it out. I don't think in my opinion starting juice would be a good idea right now. I would start with the fruit first. I find it easier to by the jarred food for now. Soon enough my daughter will be on table food. We are working on it now.
In my opinion when you feed your child you feed their brain. When they are awake they are burning fuel and if you don't add anything to that it goes out. Formula does what it can for babies but they get to a point where it isn't enough. They can drink 4 or more 8 oz bottles a day but it doesn't mean they are going to be full. Thats like adults being on a liquid diet, you try it and see what it does for you. I don't know how it became that a Dr. that sees a child for a couple of well checks or colds no more than the parents who lives with their children everyday. I take charge of my own life and my childrens, I am responsible for them including their eating. My kids are not cows nor they eat constantly but they eat their dinner know matter what I put in front of them. Feed her some fruits and her tummy will be worked out. Also one other trick is after you give her fruits if you do or if you don't make her a bottle and put in 6 oz and only put in 2 scoops of formula this will help (or how ever much she takes, don't make it full strength). Hope this helps you W.
